I'm a trombone player, venturing into the world of high brass during the off season, I am familiar with the Rubank series for the trombone so I thought I would try the cornet version. Its easy to follow, just as the trombone book was, so I'm happy with my purchase. After I get through the beginning book I will move on to the next in the series.
The Rubank series of method books has to be some of the most "classic" method books available. While labeled an "elementary" book, the book starts from the very basics and moves quickly to more advanced songs and techniques. I will caution that for younger students, the book is not very aestheically appealing. However, it does have a wealth of good excercises, especially for finger technique and lip flexibiliy, that are lacking in other more modern instrument methods. This book works as an excellent suppliment to other method books, or on its own. It certainly is a great investment for any student in their first few years of playing as there is plenty of material to work on; it also functions as a great sightreading resource.
It had a lot of high notes right away that seemed hard for my son so we switched to Essential Elements 2000. But he will go back to this book. After a few more lessons he’ll be able to get back into this book and I am sure he’ll love it.
Does not appear to be a system that has songs for the student just exercises and scales.
Purchased for my son who has been playing the trumpet for 5 months now. He is almost done it now. Highly recommended by his trumpet teacher. This book has not changed since I used it 35 years ago. BTW, my son loves the book.
Exactly what our son's trumpet tutor recommended. The tutor used this book in school and recommended it for our son to practice.
As a beginner, this book has become a key part of my practice routine. It is an old style method book with a very large number of exercises. This was just what I needed to improve my fingering, lip flexibility and especially sight reading.The only major problem with this book is that it advances too quickly into the upper register. As a beginning player, this means that it is not possible to fully play many exercises. (I recommend The Embouchure Builder, also available on Amazon to help with building range).The book has very little in the way explanations, nor does it have many tunes to play. For this reason, I suspect it might not be interesting enough for very young players who might benefit from a more breezy modern method book with more musical exercises.You wouldn't want to use this book by itself. But if you are serious about learning the cornet or trumpet, it is well worth the six dollar price to have it in your collection of method books.
Good to have around for sightreading! Method is okay, there are others I like better.
