The authors' logical approach in providing an initial listing of differential diagnoses that should be considered from the presenting symptoms is accompanied by useful diagnostic algorithms for both canine and feline pruritus. The second chapter provides clear, well illustrated instructions for diagnostic techniques which are often under used by first opinion clinicians.Chapters 3-12 cover the various clinical entities met in small animal dermatology, from the very common; abscesses, pyoderma and atopy, to the more rare presentations such as cryptococcosis, toxic epidermal necrolysis and hepatocutaneous syndrome. Each condition is well described and its differentials listed along with guides to diagnostic confirmation, treatment options and prognoses. Common synonyms are given for each condition and tables of treatment options are helpfully provided in those conditions such as Pemphigus, where alternative or combination treatments are often required. The colour reproduction is rarely less than excellent throughout all of the 1200+ images provided.I would highly recommend this book to every clinician working in small animal practice as an excellent reference on all aspects of veterinary dermatology. It is a work of significant value, either as a stand alone reference text or, as originally intended, as the perfect companion to the standard dermatology texts. My Boxer had a skin condition develop. Some general vets provided varying theories. I was very frustrated that the attitude was so cavalier and passive. I began the hunt for a dermatologist and also found this reference. The book supported my concerns that I should be expecting some diagnostic tests. When I found a dermatologist, I brought the book. We went through a series of tests and isolated her condition. I prefer paying for tests over experimenting with drugs. The dermatologist confirmed that this is one of the texts used by many vet schools. After looking at various pictures and reading several conditions, I felt that I was better prepared to speak with vets and find someone to seriously address my Boxer's condition. So happy I found it.

Very helpful book with lots of pictures. This book needs to be a part of you library.

This book is very well organized into easy to locate categories and has many photo examples of dermpath, along with great verbal descriptions of diagnosis, treatments, and prognosis. Highly recommended for those in private practice who see the MANY derm cases the we do each day.

We us this on an almost-daily basis in the clinic. The treatment tables are especially helpful.

This book is essential to any small animal practice. There are multiple pictures for each disease and the clients love to point at it and say "Yeah, thats it!"

I found that reading this cover-to-cover was too difficult to keep everything and everyone straight, so I read each story separately reading every other chapter. I thought each story was told well and the main characters well developed. I felt like I knew each of them. Their horrific experiences reminded me of how unprepared we really are to live in this world of nature. I learned some very valuable tips on survival in a very entertaining way. In my opinion, a good read.

"Lost in the Wild" is one of those books where you really want to see what happens next. Just one more chapter. Okay one more. It's an easy read that's hard to put down.The book follows the unfortunate misadventures of two different people who get lost in the woods. Two separate stories that take place in different places and different times. The book goes back and forth between the two, showing how each person got lost and what happened afterwards. The details are interesting, especially since I spend a lot of time in the backcountry myself, and the author does a great job of making us understand how perfectly capable people get into bad situations. Both stories are compelling and the reader gets to know not only those who are lost, but their companions, rescuers, families, etc. All in all it's an enjoyable book that keeps you turning pages to see what happens next.The only drawback is that, in hopping back and forth, sometimes one story can get confused with another, temporarily. Once both victims are lost, on foot, in similar environments, there are too many similarities to keep straight all the time. Maybe that's just me (and not a problem that others will have), but two stories farther apart or in different conditions might have been easier to separate.All in all a good book for anyone interested in adventure, exploration, or survival.

This is truly a captivating read of two real life stories of survival in the NE wilds of the Wisconsin woods. I highly recommend it for anyone going on a hike even if it is a "short day hike", which could easily turn into an unexpected accident or unprepared situation.That being said, while the stories are well written and give you the feeling of "being there and experiencing the traumatic situations", I found it a bit disconcerting to follow as the two stories flip-flopped back and forth with each chapter. A single story does have its own natural flipping....from the main character to either different ones or different places, but it is a bit more of a challenge in this book with two main different stories flipping. I do not fault the writer (as the writing was excellent, indeed) but moreso the editor that allowed the book to be put together in this fashion.Many people read one or two books at a time like I do, or have to put the book down after each chapter and find, that in this book, you have to almost go back and review what story you are following. This is my only criticism. Otherwise, a TOP notch book with great information for campers, hikers, and chairside adventurers.

What could possibly go wrong? A cautionary tale of heading into the woods.I loved how this book showed the myriad small decisions that created a dangerous situation. I know that "I couldn't put it down" is quite a book review cliche, but in this case, it's completely true. As a backpacker, this book made me realize many things that I could do differently to be safer each time I go on an adventure. For those who are "outdoorsy," or enjoy suspense, this is a good read. The author has done due diligence in researching the story, and tells it in a thorough, interesting, and unbiased manner.

They die of shame. At least they do according to Anthony Hopkins' character in "The Edge," they die of shame because they allowed themselves to end up in positions where they are lost and without resources. I read this engrossing tale in just a couple of sittings. What struck me most was that both men did what seemed to me to be very foolish things. Even a wilderness ignoramus like myself wouldn't wander into the woods alone without matches, an emergency blanket, some protection from the elements and some high calorie food. Even if it was only a few hundred yards. Even if it was only supposed to be for a few minutes. Read the book and shake your head at some of the things they did, especially the med student hiker who lost the trail and then left his tent and supplies and wandered away and lost those too. These are fascinating stories. I recommend this book.

I looked forward to reading from this book whenever I could. I enjoy wilderness survival stories and found this one to be well-researched and written. I haven't ever been to Northern Minnesota so the book taught me about the wilderness there and delivered a home run on the survival stories. The author did a good job of transitioning back and forth between two survival stories separated in time, but in the same general area. There were about 20 awkward words that caused me to pause and scratch my head as to the meaning . . . simpler words could have been used to make the sentences flow more smoothly. Lost in the Wild is a good book to read for anyone venturing out into the wilderness. There are some good lessons-learned from these characters. It is amazing how quickly you can get lost in the wild. If you like real outdoor adventure stories, you may also consider reading Rocky Mountain Adventure Collection. I loved this book but my 8-year-old only liked it. Issac Newton is one of those people you think you already know a lot about - physicist, astronomer, mathematician, but I was amazed how much I did not know about him and how much no one knows about him really. Losure’s research for this book is incredible and she often quotes primary sources in the text which sometimes makes the text a bit hard to understand for a younger child. My daughter said a few times, “Wait, what?” So although the chapters are short, in the 4-8 page range, and perfect for younger readers, the text may be a bit more of a challenge.The book is also filled with amazing illustrations from the time or from one of Issac’s notebooks or books. These amazing illustrations are plentiful and one of my favorite aspects of the book.I loved so much about this book but my favorite part was how Losure concluded: Isaac Newton “was not the first of the age of reason,” Keynes realized, astounded. “He was the last of the magicians.” And yet this magician, this last sorcerer - this greatest of all alechemists - was the same man who banished magic from the scientific world. An alchemist is someone who transforms one thing into another. And this, Issac had done.This actually made me tearful! I read this to my husband who decided to read the book himself after that! He loved it too! Maybe Losure can affect an important transformation of her own; perhaps the time has come for a nonfiction book to win the Newbery Medal!

This tends to interrupt the narrative flow, and the grand arc of the story in the history gets lost. This would be a perfect volume for someone who already had a firm grasp of the general outline of Indian history and wanted to fill in the details (in exhaustive detail). I would not recommend it for someone setting out to gain a basic knowledge of Indian history or someone looking for a "readable" history. It is a useful compendium nonetheless.

This is quite a unique book in the sense that it accounts for all the history of India (and in the final chapters of Pakistan and Bangladesh) from the very beginning to the last 2000's in a rather detailed and chronologically organized manner with clear language and explanations, and many pictures to accompany the text. Precisly what I was looking for!In spite of some strange (and poor jabs) at Ancient Greek language and values (e.g. the inferiority in the expressiveness of Ancient Greek compared to Sanskrit while contrary to Modern Greek, Hindustani was unable to draw from Sanskrit to modernize the language to the admission of the author) I would most definitely give this book top marks and would whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to read about the history of the Indian subcontinent.

Comprehensive history of India over 5,000 years to present. Excellent, but could use illustrations of the many shrines and temples mentioned. Author frequently switches back and forth between time periods without out clear delineation. Many of the places and leaders mentioned have multiple names, and the author confusingly switches among them while describing the period A directory would be helpful, likewise a dictionary giving the translation of the many Indian terms used would be helpful for reference when the words are repeatedly used. Maps presented are helpful given the many changes in boundaries of the territories, states and countries over time, but more detail on the maps would be helpful.

If all of your knowledge about Indian history is derived only from text book, then this is a great read to expand your knowledge and develop newer and more accurate understanding of Indian history. The greatness of the book is in it being most honest and truthful about history which is largely based on evidence gathered from numerous sources like archaeology, literature, linguistics, cultural studies and vast amounts of existing older historical writing. Most Indian history writing tends to sway between extreme view points of either Indian nationalism or one of imperialistic partisanship. This book is quite honest and stays somewhere ideally in the middle. In general author restrains himself from jumping to conclusions based on vague evidence. However, lack of evidence doesn't mean no story or less interesting story. Largely relaying on evidence which is sometimes very obscure author using his intellect often makes very mature and educated conclusions and speculations about the actual course of events.Keay is whimsical in some of his portrays of persons or events sometimes contradicting familial perception; some of which might well be true when looked at it from an absolute sense. For example though he refers to MK Gandhi as 'Mahatma'(great soul), Keay tends to think by no means Gandhi was most influential in the cause towards Indian freedom. Next, the role of revolutionaries in Indian freedom struggle who are idolized by many nationalists are brushed aside as terrorist activities in an absolute sense. Figures like Bhagat Singh etc dont even get a mention in the book! (I am not being critical of this). Other things, hes seen critical of the Brahmanical authority and caste system which has dominated most of Hindu society and religion based bloody conquests by medieval Muslim kings.Author spends good time narrating the ancient and medieval Indian history. The modern portion especially the Indian freedom movement is somewhat brisk and (even misses some details) than I would have liked it to be; yet I liked his narration of Indian political history after Independence(1947) portraying the influential characters of Indira Gandhi, ZA Bhutto and Mujibur Rehman doing justice to real state of events. But for a good read on modern Indian History I am told Ramachandra Guha's 'India after Gandhi' is a good book. In this revised book, he even covers the most recent communal tensions of Ayodhya, Mumbai etc and the Afhgan/Taliban war against terror.I was initially inclined towards buying different books for ancient, medieval and modern Indian history, but since I didnt find good recos for each separately,I decided to try this one-in-all book. Given the obscurity and lack of direct evidence associated with Indian history, one has to say its a great piece of work with all five thousand years of Indian history condensed into one precisely well written , highly recommended book.

John Keay does tremendous justice to about 5000 years of history of the Indian subcontinent in a matter of 640 pages, starting from the Harappan civilization to the final decade of the 20th century, covering political history for the most part but pausing thoughtfully on issues of culture, myth, language & values every now & then.I think that Keay's style is definitely engaging & non-partisan. Unlike some of the other reviews, I did not think that this book is entirely dry & mirthless. I think that there are many instances of having a little fun at the expense of a king here & there, a shahenshah later on & then men from his own country.I think what this book really does for me is separating the element of myth from what is history. For example, both Ashok & Akbar have legendary statuses associated with them - though as Keay reveals, some of such popular imagination is indeed deep rooted in facts, but certain extrapolations of such persona are just stuff of popular imagination.I thought that the challenges in this book are actually challenges of Indian history/geography itself. Barring certain periods, it is very fragmented. It is also debatable exactly what constituted "India" in different periods of history & which dynasties, kingdoms & men played a greater role in defining what we mean by it today.I would recommend this book very highly to anyone who wants summary content on Indian history.@souvikstweets
