Review

A The Times Politics Book of the Year"Varoufakis offers a fascinating lens on the euro system and its masters . . . Any political movement that hopes to reassert the values of European social democracy against its current legatees will have much to learn from his example, as well as his books." ―J.W. Mason, Boston Review"Fascinating" ―Dani Rodrik, author of Economics Rules and The Globalization Paradox"A gripping tale of an outspoken intellectual's sudden immersion in high-stakes politics . . . A solid work of explanatory economics. Most of all, though, it is an attempt to divine why smart, seemingly decent politicians and bureaucrats would continue pushing a pointlessly cruel approach long after its pointlessness had become clear . . . Varoufakis does a magnificent job of evoking the absurdities and frustrations of his tenure." ―Justin Fox, New York Times Book Review"If Santa is listening, here’s a suggestion about what to deliver Prime Minister Theresa May of Britain and David Davis, her chief Brexit negotiator: a copy of Yanis Varoufakis’s Adults in the Room. Mr. Varoufakis is the former Greek finance minister and his book sets out in excruciating detail the story of the 2015 negotiations between Greece’s government and its creditors. It feels like necessary reading for the Brexit team." ―Kenan Malik, The New York Times"It reads like a novel centered on a globetrotting, motorcycle-riding hero fighting the forces of darkness and ignorance . . . It is hard to read “Adults in the Room” and not feel admiration for Varoufakis’s commitment to Greece and Europe . . . If Europe is to survive, it will need to pay more attention to democrats and idealists like Varoufakis." ―Sheri Berman, The Washington Post"Varoufakis tells all this with exemplary verve, using stories such as the Faust myth, Frankenstein and even The Matrix. It’s great fun to read . . . Varoufakis has started a debate here, and he’s done it brilliantly"―William Leight, The Evening Standard"Timely, fascinating and important" ―Evaggelos Vallianatos, Huffington Post"Varoufakis’s account has the narrative drive of a rollicking detective novel .... very good, very readable, and ought to be on all the important “notable books of the year” lists." ―Stan Persky, Los Angeles Review of Books"Varoufakis has written one of the greatest political memoirs of all time . . . It is the inside story of high politics told by an outsider . . . Varoufakis gives one of the most accurate and detailed descriptions of modern power ever written." ―Paul Mason, The Guardian"A stylish memoir . . . deeply personal and very well written, with an impressive array of literary allusions . . . [Varoufakis] outlines a cogent case against the austerity heaped on Greece." ―Kevin Featherstone, Financial Times"Riveting . . . An extraordinary account of low cunning at the heart of Greece's 2015 financial bailout . . . [Varoufakis is] a motorcycling, leather jacketed former academic and self-styled rebel who took pleasure in winding up the besuited political class . . . An admirably believable depiction of a Greek and European tragedy." ―John Kampfner, The Guardian"Adults in the Room is a book that anyone interested in modern European politics should read. To say it is the best memoir of the Eurozone crisis is an understatement. It is a devastating indictment of [the] current state of Europe and a fascinating inside account of the logic of reformist politics and its limits and why it keeps going anyway . . . Varoufakis's account of the operations of EU 'decision-making' is truly shocking. He delivers a truly shocking anatomy of an apparatus bent on perpetuating its own bad logic and excluding alternatives." ―Adam Tooze, Shelby Cullom Davis Chair of History and Director of the European Institute at Columbia University, and author of The Deluge"One of my few heroes. As long as people like Varoufakis are around, there still is hope." ―Slavoj Žižek"A very, very clever person, and in the basic argument about what's been going on in Europe I think he's right." ―Martin Wolf"An outstanding economist and political analyst." ―Noam Chomsky"The most interesting man in the world." ―Business Insider"The Thucydides of our time." ―Jeffrey Sachs

"Adults in the Room" is actually a much better title than the one I use for this review, for its acerbic irony if for no other reason. But the book does show, with great clarity, that the Emperor has indeed no clothes on.This is a book every European, or any person who cares about Europe, should read. It is part memoir, part expose, part impassioned plea for a democratic, humane, rational European Union.Iirrationality breeds irrationality. The "I know I'm wrong but don't you dare say so" attitude, so forcefully portrayed and so minutely detailed in this book, is one of the reasons why larger and larger numbers of Europeans vote against what they regard as a lying, rotten, despotic establishment. One other reviewer notes that Mr. Varoufakis doesn't see Mr. Schäuble as a monster, but rather as a tragic character. Be that as it may, the hubris displayed by Mr. Schäuble, Mr. Dijsselbloem and others was nothing short of monstrous.

First an admission: Yanis and I have been friends since we met in 1991, when I was doing my PhD at the University of New South Wales and he was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. This hasn't influence my review however: if I hadn't enjoyed the book, I would simply not have written one.Having read it, I am confident that it will go down as one of the great political biographies of the 21st century. It is a work that people will turn to when they try to understand what on earth happened during our time: a riveting, compelling history of a critical act in the self-inflicted decay of European civilisation. Most political biographies are an attempt to rescue a reputation that deserved to be sullied. This one confronts the many barbs that were thrown Yanis's way, but he doesn't refrain from throwing some barbs at himself either when, on reflection, he wished he had taken a different course. That takes a courage and an honesty that I came to expect from knowing Yanis, and he did not disappoint. As the tragedy of Syriza unfolded in 2015, I had wished that Yanis would deploy the one Big Stick he had: the threat to default from Greece's unpayable loans from the IMF. On its own this was not significant, but as he explains in the book, it would in turn have triggered a cascade of defaults that would have undone Mario Dragi's program of Quantitative Easing. He did, once, have his finger on that trigger, and decided not to pull it--to wait and leave the act to Tsipras. Looking back in this book, he now wishes he had done so. If he had, he could have forced the Troika to work with Greece on a sensible program, rather than watch them impose one which will lead to Greece becoming Europe's Somalia.I like to think that I would have pulled that trigger. But I wasn't there in the hot seat: Yanis was, and he tells the tale impeccably well. This is a cracking yarn as well as a priceless political history, with major actors--Dragi, Tsipras, Merkel and above all Schauble exposed by their own words. They will not like to have their words and deeds documented this well, which is all the more reason you should read it.

So, as it turns out Yanis had a sophisticated Plan B in place but the political novices he selected as his companions were not his equals and perhaps never understood what it meant going after an amorphous opponent. I have no doubt that Greek PM Tsipras when he held a referendum on a Yes or No vote (Yes vote meaning accepting the Troika's conditions, No meaning the opposite) that he actually wished for a Yes vote so that he would not have to do the real work involved in fending off Greece from a pack of wolves. When Greeks voted No by 60%+, a naive and mostly amateurish Greek Left went into a panic mode. This was the moment of truth for Varoufakis when he realized that no men of principle were on his team. So a brilliant mind and a competent FM was totally wasted, abandoned by the same people whom he thought were for real change but obviously, they were neither his equals nor his betters. How sad to see talent wasted. On a positive note, those who wish to reform the insufferable EU and its flawed institutions now have a road map and valuable insights on how to do it. Brexiteers and freedom loving folk take notice and adjust your tactics otherwise EU slavery awaits you in perpetuity.

This book is unsurpassed as an account of the world of politics and economics as they truly exist - entwined together in the real world, immersed in the futile pursuit of power at any cost by an isolated elite who have no concern for the impact of their actions on the lives of millions. Anyone interested in stepping beyond the tired dogma of academia and the infantile myths of the mainstream media should read this book. But beware; for those who believe they understand the world from reading The Guardian, CNN etc it contains evidence, facts and unavoidable conclusions told by a brilliantly lucid narrator that you might find contradicts the comfortable nonsense you're used to. As a post graduate in politics, I've never read a book like it. Varoufakis, along with David Graeber, Warren Mosler and Nassim Taleb is one of the four most important authors of our time,

I read this all the while thinking of Flint, MI and the h20 crisis there after the city was privatized in such a manner that its municipal-democracy was suspend and denied in order to hold its working-class citizens (none of them are living off of dividends) as right-less prisoners forced to pay very, very high water bills for poisoned water still to this day. Through the lens of this book, I look at Puerto Rico right now after the hurricane, and see how our neo-liberal American establishment is at its core anti-democratic because it will not forgive Puerto Rico's debt, and wants to privatize our relief efforts.

Were the people on the ship friends? Some people were. Some people weren't. The sailors hated the Pilgrims. And the Pilgrims didn't like the sailors. The sailors made fun of the Pilgrims who got seasick. They called them "glib-gabbety puke stockings." One sailor said he wanted to throw half the Pilgrims into the sea. The sailors hated the Pilgrims' prayers and holy songs. The Pilgrims didn't like the sailors' bad language. But at the end of the voyage, the sailors had to admit that the Pilgrims had plenty of courage. And the Pilgrims were thankful that the sailors got them safely to the New World.

This book does an amazing job of conveying the truth of traveling on the Mayflower. They don't sugar coat things and make it pretty for people. It has lots of facts, including a page with an inside view of how the Mayflower would have looked and all the difficulties of traveling for so long with so many people on a crowded vessel. It's a really great book. We use it in our homeschool study of Thanksgiving. The whole series of "if you..." has been great. There are many of them about all types of different topics throughout history and we have only been able to get through a small amount of them so far, but they are all loaded with great factual information about history as far as I can tell. I plan to buy the whole series for our homeschool library. We are avid readers and I love how much these little books can teach.

This was exactly what I was looking for! Our 2 grandsons have at least 7 ancestors who sailed on the Mayflower. We did a lot of research and found their names and stories. Since the children are very young, I wanted a good solid hardcover book about the Mayflower so I could write all this information for them to have when they are older. Hopefully it will be kept safe and not meet the fate of many paperback children's books.Beyond that, I was so pleased that this book was so interesting and really gives the reader a sense of what it must have been like for the Mayflower passengers and crew. One story in particular made me realize how lucky I am to have my grandsons. A great, great, great grandfather of theirs fell overboard and almost wasn't rescued! As a child, there was always something magical about the story of the Mayflower and first Thanksgiving! I wish every family had a copy of this book to set on the Coffee Table next Thanksgiving Day. Children and adults young and old would enjoy the great pictures, colors and tales.Do you know the name of the baby born on the Mayflower?

I thought this might be a little over my kids' heads (ages 5 and 3) but they really enjoy it. We are reading a little bit each day and they are retaining the information pretty well. It's well written to appeal to younger kids in both content and style.

Very interesting and engaging book. Bought it for cubscouts in 2nd grade to learn about the pilgrims and it definitely held their attention. It's more of a reference book than a short story (long and detailed with many facts). It's a good reference book for a young student or to glean sections out for story time with younger kids.

Great book that teaches the kids of the Mayflower journey and the hardships they encountered

We love this book--I read it with my 3- and 5-year-old (the 5-year-old gets more out of it, of course). It takes the reader through a full story of the pilgrims' daily live, in appealing language with appealing illustrations. The only downside is that I think it could use an update--I think some of the information is a bit out-of-date, and new findings have been revealed. But that's probably me being nit-picky, and it's totally fine for a young child. Also, this is a fairly thick book--it's not the type you read through in one sitting, but it's organized into questions and answers so we easily find a stopping point. I love using it to introduce my kiddos to history, and as I'm planning to homeschool, I know it'll continue to get a lot of use!

This book served its basic purpose; I needed quick access to the book. However, this is not a fully functional Kindle version. Rather, it is more similar to a pdf document. I could not increase the font size or zoom in or out.

I am descended from four of the 103 passengers on the Mayflower, & this is an excellent book for my grandchildren learn how their ancestors struggled on their journey.
