A friend recently recommended this book and training manual. I guess he figured since my role as an Associate Pastor included Discipleship that this would be a good book to have in my arsenal. REAL-LIFE DISCIPLESHIP is a book written by Jim Putman who is the founding and senior pastor of Real Life Ministries in Post Falls, Idaho. In the book, Putman details what discipleship is and claims to have "proven tools and strategies" for effective discipleship. He offers many real-life examples and experiences to help the reader identify, recruit and develop potential disciples in their church or sphere of influence. In a nutshell, the disciple process is described as disciples who go out and make disciplesThe companion Training Manual is a 12-week workbook that goes into detail the process described in the book. The manual begins the process of defining a disciple, how they grow, how to make disciples, how to be intentional in sharing your faith and helping others to become disciples of Christ. The book concludes (Week 12) with a highly practical section titled "One Necessary Tool: A Small Group Curriculum" and it is the curriculum that the author uses in the small group ministry at Real Life Ministries.Overall, both of these books are excellent and they have been practical and insightful for me in helping find and develop a discipleship process that works. I am looking forward to using this material in the future as I seek to go out and find people who want to be disciples who go out and make disciples.

Jim takes you through step by step the discipleship process. Steps that his ministry has proven to be effective in disciples making disciples who make disciples. As a pastor of a smaller congregation, I see how these principles will work within our community of faith. I'm encourage for the new relationships I will be making as I model this kind of discipleship.

For generations, American churches have been very good at making converts, but few of those converts grow to maturity in Christ. With little fruit to display as evidence of their salvation, those "converts" will one day hear the Lord tell them, "Depart from Me for I never knew you." The Bible is clear that our mission as Christians is to make disciples, not converts. A person does not need to have been a life-long church member to recognize the critical need within our churches to make disciples. With that in mind, Jim Putman's book, Real-Life Discipleship: Building Churches That Make Disciples, is a godsend. Putman is the founder and senior pastor of Real Life Ministries in Post Falls, Idaho--not exactly the Bible Belt. But God has used Putman's passion for discipleship to build an 8,000 member church in less than 15 years. The amazing thing is that over 90% of the church's weekly attendance is involved in small groups. Real Life Ministries is not a typical big show driven mega-church. It is a disciple making factory. In the book, Putman introduces his readers to the discipleship methods used at Real Life. Although he frequently illustrates the book with real-life stories from Real Life, the book does not devolve into a self-congratulatory "look at how good we are" book. Instead, it comes across as humble, eye-opening, instructive and encouraging--just like a disciple maker is supposed to.This book is for every church leader or church member who is part of a church that struggles with making disciples. While not coming across like a know-it-all how-to manual, it is detailed enough to make leaders think about how the principles will work in their context. Putman's five stages of disciples' growth and the steps required to move them from one stage to the next bring great clarity to the reader. Especially helpful are the summaries, profiles and resource listings in the appendices. Be sure and have a notebook handy while you are reading--the book is an idea generator. That fact alone makes it invaluable to all who are concerned with the health of their churches.

Jim Putman in Real-Life Discipleship has taken the discipleship methodology popularized by Dawson Trotman and the Navigators and masterfully brings it into his church, Real-Life Ministries, as its main organizing principle. The book explains the disciple-making system that Real-Life uses, complete with identifying the characteristics of "infant" or new Christians, their needs, and the church's way of meeting those needs. The other stages of development of new believers at any age include child, young adult, and parent. By the time someone matures in their faith to become a "parent" they are "reproducing" and taking a new "infant" in the faith through the same system.Real-Life Ministries has grown to be a very large church and to show the internal leadership development system is working, Putman says that nearly all of their large staff team was trained within the church. He writes, "Every time a church hires from outside, it reinforces to its people that they cannon become what is needed or their own church to succeed."Putman has developed a proven system for helping believers to grow in Christ and learn how to help others to do the same. Real-Life Discipleship is a great resource for readers who want to understand and implement that system in their church.

Having read and lead a group through Discipleshift, I would say this book is even better. I love the simple biblical categories that Jim uses, which in turn make for very practical application in real world settings. The leadership principles really challenged me to consider how I as a pastor was really leading people towards full maturity in Christ.

This book is an excellent source for review and reference. It contains three chapters covering the important concepts from middle school and high school geometry, algebra, and trigonometry. It is clear and concise yet surprisingly thorough. The author focuses on giving a conceptual understanding of the topics omitting unnecessary details. His explanations and derivations are clear and understandable with helpful illustrations when necessary. This doesn't necessarily mean that it is all an easy read; many concepts will require a good amount of focus and thinking to properly understand. There are example problems and at the end of each section there are practice problems. At the ends of the geometry and trigonometry chapters are all of the important formulas so they can all be seen together for easy reference. The chapters are completely independent of each other and the sections within each chapter are mostly independent of each other so it is easy and convenient to skip to whatever section is necessary to review or reference without the need to study background material elsewhere in the book. That being said, this book definitely covers the topics "in a nutshell". It would probably not be great for learning precalculus topics for the first time and I don't think that is what the author intended it to be used for. It could be an effective supplement to a class or another more thorough textbook, but alone it would probably be insufficient. The examples and practice problems are sufficient for someone who already has a basic understanding of the concepts, but a new student will almost certainly need more guidance and practice.

I guess it would be difficult to thoroughly learn geometry, algebra, and trigonometry just from this text, but if it's been a few (or more than a few) years since you've studied these subjects, _and_ you were pretty comfortable with them when you first learned them, then this is the perfect book for brush-up. As my children are headed for high school, I decided to review all of precalculus, calculus, and related subjects (e.g. elemetary linear algebra), and this text turned out to be the perfect starting point. The author doesn't suffer fools gladly, but on the other hand he's not trying to prove how smart he is - he instead demonstrates how accessible his topics are. His introduction to the trigonometry section is particularly entertaining (I won't give it away), and darn it if he doesn't follow through on his promise. I can't see this book being outdone in its goals.

So cut and to the point it was kind of a shock, in a good way. A must have for any one interested or who works with mathematics.

"The student will have no difficulty here in separating the wheat from the chaff - for there is no chaff." - George SimmonsIn a mere one hundred pages of blazing clarity, this book covers your entire middle school and high school mathematics, and then some. If you are like me and your teachers never got around to giving you a proof for the volume of a sphere, sulk no more. Instead, grab this book and curl up in a corner., and you will learn not one or two equally brilliant but completely different proofs for these most intriguing of mathematical facts.

What can you say about a math book? It's slim, easy to read, and to the point. I got it to teach my son trigonometry since I haven't used trig in over ten years. Its brevity is excellent for such a difficult topic and it's much better than trying to sift through a bulky textbook with tons of repetitive lessons and exercises.

I am a guy who learned to love mathematics in college, but believe it or not, I was kind of a clown in high school. It is in this way that my pre-calculus background sucked. I got really good grades in my calculus and differential equations classes on college, but the sad thing is that I had to learn pre-calculus in a brute force approach: when trying to understand some topic, if that topic required an important pre-calculus concept (e.g., something as simple as factorization during some techniques for integration) I had to learn that concept on-the-fly. You can imagine then how horribly dispersed were my ideas of pre-calculus.In an effort to correct this I bought Precalculus in a Nutshell, and the results were spectacular. In just a week I was able to finish the book and work on 95% of the problems (there are many!). Simmons goes a long way in removing any useless additional information from his book while keeping the explanations fresh. I've seen huge pre-calculus textbooks that seriously don't teach as much and as well as Simmons does: they are verbose, dry and dull. In less than 120 pages this book covers Geometry, Algebra and Trigonometry. These three parts are independent of each other, so you can read then in any order you want.Even if Simmons aims for brevity, he always gives good examples (and solutions) to the topic being covered. Also, on each topic, he gives proofs for most formulas and concepts. And his proofs are so intuitive (but correct!) that when one understands one has to smile of the satisfaction. Of course, Simmons does not prove obvious things. For example, he himself argues that proving that one point is always in the middle of three points that lay in a line segment is painful to discuss, and says "...when examining a proof, the natural reaction of an intelligent student is irritation and impatience, and he is right." One word of advice though: some proofs are obscure in the sense that they are not completely laid out in just one block of the text. Simmons sometimes assumes you have a COMPLETE understanding of all the topics before the proof, so he goes over some details hoping you know what is going on. But this is not really bad, because he will always tell you for example: "Because of (a) above..." and this will be you hint to discover the influence of the topic (a) in that proof. It must be said: the explanations of some topics are really brief (though not incomplete), so if you are in a hurry you can finish this book in about three days. I don't think you could work on all the exercises in three days, but anyhow if you are very short on time you could maybe do like 5 or 6 exercises per topic. That seems like a feasible goal for a three day limit. Finally, Simmons does not cover every tiny little detail of pre-calculus in his book. He covers what he thinks are the most important topics. I agree with his choice, because looking back, these are the topics that I needed the most for my calculus, linear algebra, statistics and differential equations classes.

I come from another country where math education was different than what it is in the United States. Now I'm studying in American college and this book comes very handy when I need some extra help in some applied math problems in my science classes. Overall, the book has been a very good purchase! Text is easy to follow and problems are easy to understand with the help of this book.
