The author of the book, Christopher Danielson, (on Twitter as @trianglemancsd), does a comprehensive job of summarizing and interpreting the Common Core standards for grades K through 12. As someone who has only taught grades 6 to 8, it was great to see how the standards progressed. I also am now much more able to answer anyone's questions about the standards.Don't be thrown off by it being for parents, or for dummies for that matter. This book is for teachers, administrators, and of course parents and anyone interested in math education. I actually was obsessed with Macs for Dummies and the author David Pogue as a teenager and love the style of the book and the readability.I took notes on interesting points from the book and some questions that I have. One topic I liked when he discussed fractions was common numerators. We don't talk about being able to compare fractions with common numerators ever such as what's bigger, 2/3 or 2/4. He also talked about how you can't compare two different units, it's like comparing apples and orange. He also pointed a confusing yet commonly incorrectly solved order of operation problem that is 48 / 2(9+3). I got it wrong the first time too.An interesting question to ask a 5th or 6th grade class is: why is there no such thing as a LCF or GCM (least common factor or greatest common multiple). This will create a very interesting discussion about vocabulary. When talking about statistics, a cool way would be comparing heights of 5th and 6th, or 6th and 7th graders at a school. The Common Core does call for mean absolute deviation, though I am still unclear about the applications and what type of context it could be introduced to students in.I liked the idea of having a discussion of how old your dog is, in dog years and human years, and reason how and why they are different. I honestly can't remember off the top of my head unless I looked at the relationship of two examples. In 7th and 8th grade classes I have found myself label 2/3 as a decimal, as 0.666... and call 6 the repeating part so you only need a bar over the 6. Well, there is actually a name for that. 6 is the "repetend," the repeating part of a decimal. One question I had, was in 8th grade he said the standards introduce point slope form. In CPM's Core Connections 3 curriculum there is no mention of this form, only standard form and slope-intercept form. So, I am a bit concerned that I did not cover that last year.Lastly, I was very pleased in the Pythagorean theorem section he mentioned the distinction between acute and obtuse triangles side lengths. I brainstormed before how to keep students from not remembering which way the inequality sign faced, the two legs squared and added together or the hypotenuse squared. Apparently he thought about this too, because he showed the most common acute triangle you can think of: an equilateral triangle. Which we know has equal sides and is equiangular at 60 degrees each. So, if you have sides of 2. 2 squared plus 2 squared is 8. The last side, 2 squared, is 4. So, clearly, if the hypotenuse squared is smaller than the triangle is an acute triangle. I hope that made sense. It makes sense when you draw a picture.Oh yes, and the best anecdote of the book was when the author's son got an increase in his bed time on his birthday. So, his son saw a pattern and reasoned he could predict how late is bed time would eventually go. Great example of #tmwyk (talking math with your kids) unprompted. All in all I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any math teacher, administrator, or parent at any grade level. It gives you tips on how you can help your student think mathematically and how to help them without doing their homework.

NOt what I expected. It gives history and what you learn at each grade level but it does not give examples of how it works or give you problems to learn how to solve.

This is an awesome book! Breaks down Bill Gates Funded Common Core Math into, I know what the heck is going on now and you can help your kids. First, they are supposed to be practicing addition facts, subtraction facts, multiplication and division facts...at home! Flash Cards, memorization. They are solving the problems by composing and decomposing by tens. Do I agree? Heck no. But in the meantime, we did to get our kids a tutor or understand it our selves. Start with the Kindergarten section and work yourself up! They start the real stuff in the beginning of first grade. This book is easy to understand and truly a blessing! Worth every penny!

What a wonderful & enlightening little book! Danielson has written a much needed book for this time of debate and confusion over the Common Core Math Standards. In this slim volume, Danielson succinctly clarifies for parents the major shift in math education toward thinking & sense-making and outlines the key learning goals for each grade (K through 9 and into high school). He writes with great respect for parents' concerns for their children's math education. Chapters 3 and 4, which focus on the Standards for Mathematical Practice and Homework Assignments, are must-reads for any parent who is feeling puzzled by what they see their child bring home and is unsure how it fits into rigorous, high quality math instruction. In addition to helping parents better understand the math their children are learning in school, Danielson concludes his book with a collection of twenty fabulous resources and suggestions for doing math with kids at home. It is clear that his goal is to empower parents to engage meaningfully in their children's math learning.Although Danielson's book is titled Common Core Math for Parents, I think it is also a valuable resource for educators. The concise way in which Danielson has managed to present the goals of the practice standards can provide practical guidelines for teachers as they continue to implement these new standards in their teaching. And the clear summaries of key learning goals for each grade can help classroom teachers gain a better understanding of the entire learning progression of their students, from the years leading up to the grade they teach to those far beyond it. Finally, the book provides an excellent model for educators of how to have a powerful and productive conversation with parents about the math instruction that is going on in the classroom.I recommend this book to anyone who has questions about Common Core Math today. Danielson never talks down to his readers. There's no politics here. Common Core Math for Parents is a clear guide to math instruction today written by a skilled and caring educator who loves doing math with kids and wants to share that with others!

I am using this book for one of the classes in my Master's of Arts in Leadership program. I love this book - I am not a huge reader and don't typically enjoy all of my textbooks. However, Malphurs does an incredible job of describing how a Christian organization should plan their strategy. He helps you to develop a mission, vision, and strategy. And if you already have that for your organization, his book will help you to assess it and improve! This is really a great book and I would recommend it to others. This review is my opinion and it is truly what I believe about this product. Thank you for reading my review. Please give it a thumbs up if it was helpful to you! :)

Aubrey Malphurs' third edition of Advanced Strategic Planning arrived in the mail a couple of months ago. This is the third time I have attempted to read this book straight through. I am now convinced that it cannot be done. The appendixes and notes divert attention to the significant riches tucked away in those pages. Anyone wishing to learn the art and science of church consulting will recognize this book for the invaluable resource that it is. It stands without peer in its field. Dr. Malphurs continually pours his newest, freshest research and years of skill and practice into each update. This book is a dissertation on how to diagnose and treat churches in need of strategic envisioning. Our daughter has a class in Russian history this fall. I am reading along from my old textbook. One thing that stands out to me from the Soviet Era is the abject failure of strategic planning that the Soviet central leaders attempted every five years. Strategic envisioning is different from strategic planning. It is more flexible for the rapid changes we live with in our time. Strategic envisioning recognizes that if we plan for five years out and circumstances change in six months, we need a new plan. Attempting to accomplish something based on faulty or unrealistic planning is foolish. The Soviet Union's demise is instructive for church work on so many levels. The three parts of the book are: Part 1: Prepare to Sail! The Preparation for Strategic Planning Part 2: Set the Course! The Process of Strategic Planning Part 3: Pursue the Course! The Practice of Strategic Planning Appendixes include inventories, surveys, audits, evaluations, commitments, and worksheets to assist in the different parts of the planning process. Many of these are useful stand-alone tools. Every pastor and church consultant needs this book. Read it, learn from it, return to it frequently. Feel free to try to read it straight through. I'm betting you can't do it, either.

Real quick, this book covers all the aspects of strategic planning. It is one that I did not read from cover to cover because I found myself bored to tears in sections only because I already knew what Aubrey was talking about in that particular section so I had to pick and choose where I read in this book.I am giving it a 4 not because the amount that the whole book enriched my life, but because in the sections that did help me, I found it to be a great help. This book will cover all aspects of strategic planning. Be prepared to pick and choose what you read.

This book is absolutely outstanding. But it is not for the faint of heart. I bought this book and did not read it for over year. The book was so long and detail that I tried to avoid it. But for anyone in the church who wants to understand and undergo a process of strategic planning in the church, this book is the Bible of Church Strategic Planning. I read the book and then outlined it in order to digest its contents. What I discovered that Malphurs strategic planning materials serve as the template or underpinning of other commonly observed ministry strategies such as Rick Warren in the Purpose Driven Church or Patrick Morley's No Man Left Behind men's ministry strategy. When you read and understand this book, you will be fully equipped to develop a thorough strategic plan for your church or ministry.

There is no ministry that can't learn from this book. Thinking strategically through what the author presents is vital to being a healthy church... But I will admit that I do not believe the whole book applies to every ministry. Meaning, I think there are certain sections that some ministries will get a lot out of whereas other sections may be good for an entirely different ministry... All things considered, the whole book should be prayerfully read to see if our ministries are what God calls them to be.

I'm a church elder. The information provided combined with Malphurs' perspective was priceless. Okay, I admit it is not an easy read but it is a book every senior pastor, executive pastor, and elder should study. This is not simply a book on theory but rather a work on the reality of how to make every church more effective. If you only take away one thing from this book, let it be that the guiding principle for leading your church is that, "It's all about The Savior."

This is a great resource. From reading this book I now see why so many churches operate in survival mode - lack of planning by church leaders. I checked several church websites to see how many churches do not know how to write a proper mission statement since this book teaches the proper way to write one. There are many! Congregations are being cheated and God's kingdom cheated by leaders who won't take the time to properly plan. This is an excellent resource.

"Advanced Strategic Planning" awakens the ministerial micro-manager and directs him toward effective pastoring. Aubrey Malphurs acknowledges the tools of the shepherd, and explains how they are used. More importantly, however, he tells us why.
