I am a huge fan of Alexandra Robbins' books, with "Pledged" being my absolute favorite. So when I heard she was writing a book about fraternities, I was so excited.One of my favorite things about Robbins' books is the way she goes back and forth between the research she has uncovered about her chosen topic and her subjects. With "Fraternity" it's two men, one who has just started college and is looking into joining the Greek system and one who is Chapter President and the issues and obstacles that come with the position. Robbins takes us behind the scenes of fraternity life while following the two men over the course of a year. As always, her writing and storytelling is wonderful and research insightful. Along with the two men she follows, the book is full of quotes and stories from other men in fraternities from all over. I could not put this book down.

Once again, Alexandra Robbins had me hooked by the first page of the first chapter! I've enjoyed all of her books as she truly helps the reader get to know the characters. She expertly shares their experiences with the readers and strategically provides necessary history as context. She is not afraid to tackle controversial topics in hopes to advance conversation. Fraternity is a must-read, whether you were part of the Greek system or not. I was a Non-Greek but work in higher education. She truly captured so many nuances and challenges of the Greek community within higher education. Additionally, she shares a variety of perspectives with readers, allowing us to make our on judgments. Thank you for this book! I highly recommend it and if you have not read her others, you should!

I enjoyed reading this book and learning about the fraternity system through the eyes of the two young men Robbins follows, one who belongs to what seems to be a stereotypical fraternity and the other who creates a much more positive experience as the president of his fraternity. Other fraternity members were also interviewed to fill out more details from different perspectives. All aspects of fraternity life are covered from good to bad, through not only the anecdotal stories but also extensive research on the topics. No issue is left unaddressed from alcohol to the treatment of women. This would be a helpful book for parents of sons who want to join fraternities as well as for people who work at universities. Alexandra Robbins writes amazing books that allow her readers a unique window into the lives of young people and Fraternity is equally as enlightening.

This book is brilliant I am a new dog owner and got my mini dachshund puppy last month. This book was an invaluable resource in helping me to prepare for my puppies homecoming and everything I need to get for the first few months. There is also a section about bringing home rescue dachshunds. I continue to use this as my puppy grows older there are really good sections on socialization and training. I recommend to new dachshund owners in particular as there as so many breed specifics I was not aware of.

Having had one beautiful dachshund I decided to read this book when I finally got my second. My first had passed on through causes I could not have prevented and, in an attack of anxiety, I finally gave into the thought that I might not know it all after all. I like the breakdown she has on how to teach basic obedience, having separate sections for leash training, sit, stay, etc. Dachshunds have a personality that is all their own and I think the author does well to explain how this will impact the style of training these lovable dogs need. It's a rather bold title, and while I don't believe it's the "Complete Guide", it is a great addition to my library of dachshund books.

This is a great book! It is the most comprehensive Dachshund book I've read. I've read it cover to cover and have referred back to it several times while training my new miniature dachshund puppy. It covers everything from selecting the right puppy/dog to showing your dog. It is filled with great housebreaking training tips, solutions to everyday problems, first aid tips, and even how to handle a hard to train dog. It is a fantastic source of information for any dog owner, but especially the dachshund owner.

This book covers every possible aspect of owing a doxy. It spells out everything that can go wrong so that people will not buy the dog and then months later give it to the pound.The first chapter describes the lifetime cost, $20,000, and the several hours per day of your time that is required to keep poochie healthy and happy.It then goes into great detail on finding the proper breeder. Then taking the dog home and holding hands with it hours per day until it is happy in your house.Socializing the dog with all sorts of people and other pets.Preventing bad behavior.Traveling. And on and on.

After switching dog breeds I needed a good book for dachshunds. I got the dog and then the book so 1/2 of the book became useless to me as it described in detail where to look for one and if the breed would be a good match for you. The other half was very repetitive and I might as well have gone to a library for 20 minutes and flip thru the book there.

About the Author

Eustace Mandeville Wetenhall Tillyard was born in 1889. From 1945 to 1959 he had been Master of Jesus College, Cambridge; 1953-196 President of the International Association of University Professors of English. Among his better known works are : Milton, Poetry Direct and Oblique, Shakespeare's Last Plays, Studies in Milton, and The Epic Strain in the English Novel. He died in Cambridge at the age of seventy-three.

This is a gem of a book that basically explores the Elizabethan way of viewing the world by examining popular literature and philosophies of the period.Quoting extensively from the likes of Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser and Sidney (among many others) and making reference to the Greek philosophers that influenced Elizabethan thought, particularly (pun intended) Plato, Tillyard explains the way people of the 15th and 16th centuries understood their relationship to the corporeal and spiritual world and how they established hierarchies of being from oysters through to lions; from paupers to kings. How these all existed in a complex and simple relationship, a chain of being within the cosmos. How this was all regarded as functioning within very ordered vertical and horizontal planes and within a deep religiosity, is also explored. While anyone familiar with Elizabethan literature and history will not be unfamiliar with Tillyard's ideas, it's the way they're explained and how literature and plays are used to both provide and support evidence that makes this book particularly delightful.I think the most surprising thing to come out of the text for me was Tillyard's summation that for all we think of the Elizabethan poets and dramatists as having some special relationship to their muses, the world and imagination, what they produced was quite "ordinary". What he means by this including the music of the spheres in a poem, or likening the queen to the sun or moon and stars, linking the macrocosm and microcosm - was rather commonplace thinking for the time. He is not diminishing the accomplishments of the poets etc but rather asking us to understand that all Elizabethans read the world in that way, so the language of Shakespeare, Milton and Marlowe etc. was speaking to like-minded people who lived and breathed the allusions rather than grasping at powerful and beautiful metaphors that prove elusive to so many now. While an obvious point, I loved reading it and have subsequently tried to read Spenser with that view of the world in mind. It really does change things and make them easier to grasp. Not as easy as I'd like, but for that to happen, I'd have to step back in time awhile. Now, where's my Tardis....?

Basically the book is a study of the ideas and beliefs shared amongst authors in the age of Shakespeare, Donne, and Milton (the theological trends of the 16th Century) and quotes many authors of that time to put together an intricate puzzle of the world picture and cosmic order in its divine harmony. Although Elizabethan (of English Renaissance Epoch) correspondencies are the same as Medieval, the Middle Ages used them more intellectually(like a mathematical formula) - occurring in Chaucer's "Astrolabe", where Hidgen the monk of Chester takes on the organization of the Universe with profound serenity; the Elizabethans allow for more passion and imagination, wonderfully full of fierce comparison. God is usually in the background sustaining the whole order of creation. In conclusion, there's more to divine order and the world picture that can be covered here - I urge you to study it by reading this amazing book. Elizabethan literature has great wealth of references to all possible ways of thinking about the stars, from our being merely the star's tennis-balls, to our faults not being in the stars but within ourselves.

A short & very good book that introduces the reader to the worldview of "pre-enlightenment" England & Europe. Remember that the authors goal was to contextualize the works of Shakespeare, Milton etc. It's the ancient classical platonic-hermetic view of reality, read through the Bible (olympian gods = judeo-christian angels. I would prefer if it had gone into more detail than it does, but there are other books for that purpose.

The only improvement could be a reference as there are a lot of different ideas. Despite being organized, it's often hard to isolate particulars which is frustrating when you need to find a quote.

Tillyard is a classic, must-read for people who are studying Shakespeare, Elizabethan Theatre and Tudor history. The emphasis is on the Elizabethan idea of position and rank. All people and creatures have a specific place in the hierarchy of the universe--all people, all things in their proper place. A short introduction that will whet you appetite for something bigger: David Bevington, perhaps?

This small classic is a MUST for all those interested in history and English literature. The Elizabethan World Picture by Tillyard provides an important insight into Elizabeth thought and customs. It will serve you well: whether you are reading Shakespeare, or the contemporary, brilliant trilogy by Hilary Mantel on Thomas Cromwell, (which has won two consecutive Booker awards). Highly recommend!
