This book gives a sweeping over view of the places where cathedrals were built. The sensibilities of the people coming out of the dark age into an enlightened time is revealed in numerous ways. Karen Ralls seems to know where the interesting and wonderful connections are hidden in the past and she brings them to us in her writing. This book illuminates any person whether of religion or of none religious life views.

Extensive study of Medieval life focusing on the cathedral. Emphasizes the social context over architecture. Filled with interesting details. Well-illustrated.

While it has some good illustrations, I expected more depth to Dr. Rall's writing. I felt I was reading a TV script rather than a scholarly work.

Karen Ralls is the best and her books are beautiful to look at as well as very educational.

In my opinion, this is Dr. Ralls’ best book so far. However, I caution the reader that it is not a book about the architecture of Gothic cathedrals. There are plenty of those. Instead, it is a comprehensive look at exactly what the author says in her subtitle: It is a guide fit for would-be travelers and those interested in history, art, and symbolism describing what you would want to know if you were engaged in a pilgrimage to any or several of these magnificent places---a pilgrimage that may be an actual physical journey or that may be a journey in one’s mind and spirit, or both.As always, very thorough in her research with plenty of references for those who choose to go deeper and with maps and locations of sites to visit, Ralls begins by investigating for us how allowing light into the inner darkness of the new cathedrals began as the idea of Abbot Suger at the abbey church of Saint-Denis outside of Paris. It was, as she says, “an extraordinarily experimental project…its unusual features and beauty stunned everyone present at its unveiling---with its pointed arches, bejeweled stained glass windows, and other unique features never seen before.” Completed in 1144, it was the first truly western Gothic building. Suger described his vision and his intention as exhibiting “continuous light.”Our author traces the development of the great cathedrals that followed, with their high naves, flying buttresses on the outside that support the structure, pointed arches, rib-vaulted ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate stone carvings. She particularly emphasizes the process of how these giant edifices were built as a component of medieval society and how they were subsequently used, both inside and outside, not just as great houses of worship but also as community centers, market places, concert halls, and settings for pageants, festivals and feasts. Being both an accomplished musician and an academic herself, Dr. Ralls explains how these cathedrals influenced the development of music and of education at that time. She spends time writing about the importance of the various building tradesmen and their craft guilds---the stonemasons, sculptors, carpenters, metal workers, glass makers, painters---and their progression from apprentices to journeymen to masters who “guarded their trade secrets, special techniques, and initiation rituals very closely.” We begin to see the real importance of the knowledge the Knights Templar brought back from their crusades in the East in terms of building techniques and how it spurred a revival of interest in the numerical and geometric philosophies of Pythagoras and Plato. It is no wonder that the Cistercian spiritual head of the Templars, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a prominent rival to Abbot Suger, would refer to God in a geometric sense, often to the displeasure of the Church in Rome. Chapter 5 further emphasizes the importance of geometry by taking us on a tour of the use of mazes and labyrinths on both the Continent and the British Isles inside Gothic cathedrals as well as outside. In a later chapter, we see the importance of the ancient Vesica Piscis geometric symbol as a “form generator” of the pointed Gothic arch. We learn how the great cathedrals were used as solar observatories and how Roger Bacon, the medieval philosopher, scientist, alchemist, and astronomer was eventually condemned to prison by his fellow Franciscans because his scientific interests were anathema to the Church. We can appreciate how Bacon set the mode for “underground” philosophers and scientists to ingeniously encode their knowledge into Gothic cathedrals using geometric principles and elements of Neo-Platonic philosophy.A good deal of text and some dramatic color photographs of stained glass windows further emphasize the theme of Lux Lucet in Tenebris: “Light shines in Darkness.” But, as Ralls reminds us, the Light is not just what we see shining down inside the church from the vivid colors of glass above. It is the light of Wisdom itself---a reflection of the possibility for inner illumination and truth. And, she adds, “Such connections are available to anyone in the world who can visit and appreciate the beauty of a Gothic building---whether the person is spiritually inclined or not.”Dr. Ralls has assembled in this book some of the most beautiful photographs of both interior and exterior art, architecture, and sculpture taken by a variety of photographers, including the author, herself. It is a fine piece of visual artistry as well as an illuminating text. But, perhaps the most intriguing part of the book comes in the last two chapters. Here I was given information which was new to me, detailed information about the journeys of religious pilgrims to see the various relics, shrines, and tombs at many of the cathedral sites---the preparation, the costs, the dangers and difficulties of travel in medieval times. Fascinating! We are reminded that we, ourselves, are constantly on our own pilgrimage---the pilgrimage of life itself. We can, perhaps, more easily travel than those faithful of centuries ago, but the results on our psyche and on our being will most likely be similar. And, this volume stands as a fitting tribute to those who were responsible for construction and use of those grand buildings we can still visit. As one who has had the fortunate opportunity to experience many of them, I can readily agree with Dr. Ralls when she says, “Pilgrimage is a journey to the center. It is to travel to a sacred place for inspiration and wisdom, to re-connect with the wonder and awe of the Universe, however you choose to define it.”First reviewed in New Dawn magazine, Issue No. 153

Ha, I haven't actually read this yet. I saw Karen on a TV special and thought she was adorable, so I got one of her books.

I've always liked Lonely Planet but lately I feel like they're lagging. So when it came to Croatia this was a better book for me. I liked their honest point of view of the sites, how to approach it (distance, how long it takes to see it, etc), they listed the business hours and the entrance fees, and their restaurant recommendations were all spot on!! The ones in Dubrovnik were the best restaurants we could have hoped for.For the record, I bought both the Lonely Planet and the Rough Guide version, scanned / read through both of them and went with the Rough Guide one. It also has more pictures to give you more of a reference. The one thing that Rough Guides is missing is more history. For eg, it hardly have any history on Plitvice NP. So we had to find this on another source.

Really loved this book when we toured Croatia. Detailed map showed even the smaller cities and described what we could see there. Will definitely buy the Rough Guide when we travel to Spain next year.

I've read only about a third of this book, as we are traveling only part of the Dalmatian Coast [Split to Bay of Kotor] and not going up the northern Dalmatian Coast or into interior Croatia at all. But the information, insights, and history provided in what I read were excellent. The writing style is authoritative, but not authoritarian, the content is informative, but not a simple listing, and the history--both ancient and modern--seems thorough and evenhanded. The maps are also well placed in the text, and generally include all the points of interest and sights the surrounding text is designating and describing.Don't be put off by my saying I read only a third of this book. This is a big book--478 pages.Of the 8 major sections, I read 2, plus the 55 pp. introductory sections and the 25 pp. history section [that was truly excellent, the author, Jonahan Bousfeld, is writing a book on Adriatic history due out next year, and because of the clarity and succinctness of his writing, I will look for this book]. If this book were on traveling in the USA, reading the section on traveling from Washington DC to the Florida Keys to Bermuda would be comparable to reading about Split to Dubrovnik to the Bay of Kotor in a Croatia travel book. Further, as I skimmed the sections on Zagreb, northern Dalmatia, and the southern Dalmatia islands, I wished our trip was going to be 3 or 4 weeks, not 10 days.I rank this Rough Guide to Croatia [March 2016 Ed.] as one of the best travel guides I've read--and we have a 2 bookshelf's of travel guides and have given or thrown away many others. While reading this book, I also read Rick Steve's. I generally like Steve's books and find them helpful, but too often slanted to the backpacker and budget-minded traveler--but still loaded with great info and tips. This Rough Guide to Croatia is a more "literary" and provides an excellent modern historical context for all the Balkans.

Owing to the intense price hikes, a lot of the pricing info is out of date as of spring 2017. Loved the history portions, and the maps were excellent.

This book was ok but i must admit i have had better experiences with other guides. It seemed like everything that was recommend was common local places. I like being able to find more off the beaten path recommendations. No good recommendations for shopping

Great

I really don't know what to make of ANCILLARY MERCY, the third and, presumably, final book in the Imperial Radch series. ANCILLARY JUSTICE, the first book in the series, took the field by storm, winning all sorts of awards, and deservedly so. It introduced the concept of the ancillary, an individual that isn't an individual; a being that is at once a starship and part of a starship. It was also lauded for its use of a single gender pronoun for both genders, rendering the concept of gender itself nearly irrelevant, if not completely so. It was well written, and injected a terrific breath of fresh air into the space opera sub-genre.ANCILLARY SWORD, the second book in the series, seemed to indeed suffer from being the second book in a series, kind of a bridge between the introduction and set up of the story and what would presumably be the triumphant, climactic finish to the entire story. In my review of ANCILLARY SWORD, I called it more of a soap opera than a space opera, with all sorts family squabbles and intrigue, and in my mind not a lot happened.Which brings us to ANCILLARY MERCY. A friend of mine commented something to the effect of "that's a lot of book for what happened in it". I think he hit it on the head. But let's not get ahead of ourselves here. So, aside from the neat and interesting concepts introduced in the first book, the overarching storyline is that Breq, former Justice of Toren ancillary and now Fleet Captain of the Radch forces in the Atheok system, is out to destroy Anaander Mianaai, the Lord of the Radch. You see, there's a civil war going on in Radch space, but the thing is that the civil war is between at least two different instantiations (okay, the former software developer in me is coming out) of Anaander. Breq has been made Fleet Captain by one of those instantiations, but she is looking to go after the other instantiation. I do waffle a bit on how many there are, because Breq herself thinks there might be more than two, but that was never followed up on.The contains familiar characters, as Lieutenant Seivarden and Tisarwat are back along for the ride. We have yet another Presger translator as well as an ancillary from another ship that has apparently remained hidden from the Radch empire for a very long time. Quite frankly, I still haven't quite discerned the purpose of the new ancillary, and the Presger translator seems, in general, to be there for increasingly annoying comic relief, constantly asking for fish and fish sauce (this tells you a lot if most of what I remember from the book is about the Presger translator). Then again, the translator does make a decision that will influence the future of the empire, but it is never followed up on.And there is the final confrontation with Anaander Mianaai. I had been wondering for quite some time how the whole situation was going to be resolved, as there are numerous Anaanders on both sides of the civil war. The answer to that question is, in my mind, quite disappointing. Nothing much happens, really (other than a lot of tea drinking), and the solution to the problem doesn't seem to be much of a solution at all. It seems that the conflict should be one that is difficult to win, given the numbers involved. In the end, I'm not sure there was a winner or a loser. There is a lot of high praise going around for ANCILLARY MERCY right now. I am afraid that I'm in the minority - I just don't see it. As I said to another of one of my friends recently, when he asked what I thought of it, "I wasn't moved". There was still a lot of family squabbling, still a lot of political maneuvering, but not a lot of interesting goings on. As I was disappointed in ANCILLARY SWORD, I was even more disappointed in ANCILLARY MERCY. While the book itself was well written, I'm not sure what it was written about. I'm left with an empty feeling that a lot more was promised, but not enough was delivered. It's not clear to me that if there is ever another book written in the Radch universe that I will pick it up and read it.

I loved Ancillary Justice but this book and Ancillary Sword were both terrible. Okay, not terrible terrible, just terrible. As I mentioned in my review of Ancillary Sword, that book had no conclusion. This book has no real beginning since it is simply a continuation of the story. Only, annoyingly, it keeps having the characters think about, or the author stuff in, bits of background in awkward places. Since you must have read Ancillary Sword to get anything out of this (and Ancillary Justice to have any reason for reading Ancillary Sword), then no one needs that background. And we don't need it twice, or sometimes even thrice. This book has most of the same problems as its predecessor and none of the originality of Ancillary Justice. Basically it is a space-opera. Our golden hero fights its own internal (but minor) demons while saving the universe. The ship's crew goes around pretending to be ancillaries, which is an obvious attempt by the author to bring back some of the magic of the original novel. All it does is strip them of personality or character development. Since they are referred to by designations, this makes their position in obscurity assured. The novel does have a conclusion, although unsatisfactory, unlike Ancillary Sword, so that's good. Some novels weren't meant to have sequels.

I loved the Imperial Radch series. The originality of Breq as a protagonist (and Anaander Mianaai as antagonist), the richness and originality of the universe Leckie created, the musings on identity and power (both individual and institutional) ... while there were clear influences from other classic SF writers, Leckie's voice and her creation were entirely her own. Although this was a space opera, it was an unconventional one ... it was ultimately more about brains than brawn. There is plenty of action, but if you're expecting light sabers and Death Stars, you're in the wrong universe. Imperial Radch is more of a chess match savored over tea rather than an MMA cage fight. At its core, it is about the conflict between Breq and Anaander Mianaai--the former is technically not human, the latter technically is, but both have such longevity and a multitude of bodies they have inhabited, that the line is quite blurred as a practical matter. Yet, Breq is an unconventional protagonist in more ways than one--as the series evolves, her mission is not to defeat Anaander (she frankly admits that she could care less about the "family feud" between the various factions of Anaander Mianaai) but rather the paradigm that Anaander has created. Breq's actions, even her very existence, challenge the status quo; the presence of the Presger translator as absurdist jester further highlights the arbitrariness and silliness of the established social and political order (with lessons for the politics, religions, social hierarchies, ethnic divisions, etc. of our own world too, of course). Overall, as a series, Leckie created works that stimulate the mind and tickle the imagination. With respect to the individual books (some spoilers ahead), Ancillary Justice is easily the star of the series. Simply in terms of ideas, I think you could argue that most of what Leckie is most interested in (identity, power, empire) is all contained in this book. The plot is tight, original, and suspenseful. Ancillary Sword is probably the weakest of the three, but I did not mind it as much as others did (the top reviews on Amazon, at least, are pretty brutal). Interestingly, while I liked Ancillary Mercy, I did not love it quite as much as others seemed to. Leckie rediscovers the action and deliberate-but-suspenseful pacing of the first book, as we have the return of Anaander as an active menace rather than just an abstract threat. The decision to give AIs the right and ability to determine their own destiny is an interesting and natural development from previous books (if Justice of Toren / Breq can be autonomous, why not other ships, and stations?) ... and the reactions of others to this development (ranging from anger to fear to amusement) are telling and important in a world where AIs, ancillaries, "people" like Anaander with multiple bodies, etc. make the line between human and non-human unclear and subjective. For me, however, the last couple of chapters were a little underwhelming and felt a bit rushed. Specifically, "defeating" Anaander by invoking the treaty with the Presger seemed like a bit of a cop-out ... and, by the end, Anaander acts more like a scared, spoiled child than a powerful and formidable empire-builder (I'm reminded of the old adage about a story being only as good as its villain--although, of course, the "system" is the true villain here ... Anaander is simply its creator and curator). In general, the role of the Presger throughout the series was problematic for me, from the out-sized role played by the Presger gun, the absurdity of the translator (which serves an important role by pointing out the arbitrariness of many of the social and political institutions of the Radch empire, but at times devolves more into--dare I say it--Jar Jar Binks territory), and then finally the treaty which acts almost as a deus ex machina solution to the "Anaander problem". I feel like Leckie could've been just as effective by leaving the Presger out of it, and just focusing on the newfound agency of the AIs. The final chapter was a little anticlimactic as well, as we get into the "sausage making" of creating a new paradigm, without (apparently) any concern of further outside interference. It also felt like Leckie was trying to lay the foundation for future spinoffs from this trilogy ... is this really the end? We get to say good bye to a cast of memorable and likable characters ... but is this goodbye forever? That said, the good guys won, unresolved plot lines were tied up, much tea was drunk, so it was still an enjoyable finale--I just didn't *love* the ending, and overall felt like this book didn't quite have the same power as the first. Overall, however, this was a great series, and I look forward to seeing what Leckie comes up with next!
