Michael MacDonald's "All Souls" is a beautiful example of "this-and-that" writing. His coming-of-age memoir of growing up in the rabidly Irish-Catholic enclave of South Boston during the transitional 70s and 80s (drugs, integration, development, gentrification), neither excuses nor glorifies his neighborhood's appalling problems. He simply lays it all out in graphic, oftentimes violent, storytelling images. His style is more journalistic than memoirist: This is what happened - as he knew it or saw it, but not as he felt it - and that was that.Although I loved this book, I only gave it four out of five stars since it wasn't originally conceived, even though MacDonald is an original voice, and was poorly edited. "All Souls" was released more than two years after the 1998 independent film "Southie," starring Donnie Wahlberg, (the movie was shot in South Boston in 1997), which introduced many of the same literal and figurative ideas found in MacDonald's book.Perhaps MacDonald realized that along with all of South Boston's other lost chances - of lives, futures, hopes, traditions, neighborhoods and families - that the chance to tell their own stories was also being taken away by "outsiders."MacDonald deftly uses that victim mentality - that Southies see things as being taken away when in reality they are being left behind because they refuse to adapt and change - as the central theme for his story. South Boston was a proverbial case of "pride goeth before a fall." In MacDonald's telling, it was a hard pride and a hard fall and one from which Southie has yet to recover.

The book is interesting for its image of Southie as seen through the eyes of a child growing up there. The story starts out in the early 1970s, roughly 1974. I lived in greater Boston at this time. I moved there for work, excited to move to a college town, in the state that voted for George McGovern. Unfortunately, Boston was not just a college town. I had the wrong accent, and in business there were many Bostonians who treated me as an outsider, not to be trusted. That same distrust of outsiders pervades Southie. The events of the day were very disturbing. Having campaigned for Tom Bradley (first black mayor of Los Angeles) a few years earlier, I was horrified by events in Boston. Louise Day Hicks, people shouting “Bus the n****** back to Africa,” and the stoning of school buses were all beyond my comprehension.Although I witnessed racist parades in my neighborhood on Massachusetts Avenue, I only saw the events in Southie in the news, either the Boston Globe or WBZ. I had two colleagues at work, Joe and Michael, both from Southie, who had advised me not to go there without one of them to escort me. Hearing of the racial conflict in Southie, I envisioned working class whites against black kids, when in fact it was poor whites, many on welfare, resisting integration with black kids of similar or better economic status.Welfare mothers, having more babies by different fathers; unemployed alcoholic men hanging out on the street with a paper bag; dropouts; shoplifting and theft and gangs. That was a stereotype I had heard used to describe life in the ghetto. That same stereotype turns out to describe perfectly the white population of the housing projects in Southie, as described by the author.Early on, I read the smattering of negative reviews. I attributed some of them to being judgmental about the people in the book, including the author’s single mother, criminal siblings, and racist neighbors. Still, I enjoyed getting the author’s perspective, as the author is writing about his experiences as a child. But, as the book progressed I found myself losing interest. First, I was having trouble keeping track of all the characters, many of whom are siblings, but many are not. I should have started a list when I began reading the book. Second, I began to feel as if I were stuck in a waiting room, forced to watch The Jerry Springer Show. I didn’t think very highly of these people when I lived in Boston, and a more intimate portrayal does not help. In fact, they’re more dysfunctional than I thought.Boston has changed (and so has Southie), but the time I lived there is chronicled in this book. It was a year that persuaded me that I fit better in Los Angeles.Bottom line: I would grab a tablet to write down the names of all the characters as they appear, open Google Maps to South Boston, at the intersection of 8th Street and Dorchester Street (not Dorchester Avenue), and the traffic circle where Old Colony meets Columbia and Preble. Rotary Liquors is what was once the HQ for Whitey Bulger’s criminal enterprise. Read the book for as long as it holds your interest. If you can get through the litany of death and disaster in the middle, the story gains an adult perspective and once again commands attention.

This deeply moving biographical novel succinctly captures the eternal and historical struggle of the integrated relationship between racism and classicism in America. The trials and tribulations of a poor, large, White Irish family living in a Boston housing project clearly reflect the exact same life experiences of other poor ethnic/racial groups trying to make it and survive in this land of promised opportunity.Although the South Boston Bulger gangster phenomenon serves as a Greek chorus to the times, this passionate family story itself totally overshadows that scourge and underscores the unending challenges, desperation, and heartache of living poor in America.Adjust the color lens and, historically, you witness how political "saviors" prey on the vulnerabilities of the innocent and uninformed...all in the name of making America great again. All Souls takes place in the late 70's when the issue of busing and desegregation dominated Boston as well as national headlines. The reputation of the "hub of the educational universe", as an overtly racist enclave, intensified greatly at that time and still lingers today. This worthwhile novel, itself, is actually timeless in its themes of family crisis, intervention, and survival. All Souls is an excellent vehicle to use in high school and college classrooms to encourage discussions on the impact of racism and classicism in today's America and the future implications of its continued course.Definitely a thumbs up selection!

Review

'A propulsive storyteller, using clear and cutting prose''Fu precisely renders the banal humiliations of childhood, the chilling steps humans take to survive, and the way time warps memory''An ambitious and dynamic portrayal of the harm humans - even young girls - can do''The first truly great novel I've read in 2018... As intricately fashioned and as bold-hearted as books by novelists who've been publishing for decades''Fu offers an unblinking view of the social and emotional survival of the fittest that all too often marks the female coming of age''These portraits of sisterhood, motherhood, daughterhood, wifehood, girlfriendhood, independent womanhood, and other female-identified-hoods sing and groan and scream with complexity and nuance, and they make me want to read her next ten books'--The Stranger'To say this is a story of survival is too simple... Fu avoids the obvious and tidy, allowing us to imagine what happens next''I loved it for its portrayal of each of the girls... and for showing that a single incident can colour your entire life''A thoroughly entertaining, complex novel full of intricate insights into human nature'

I was truly looking forward to this book being about summer camp and the influence it has on girls’ future lives. As someone who spent thirty-four summers at camp as a camper at first, then later as a staff member, and still later as a camp director, I am extremely well aware of the role summer camp plays in building character and determining the directions we all take as we grow older. Unfortunately, I didn’t find much of that in this book. I found the camp portion of the story so far-fetched that I had difficulty enjoying the rest of the book. I felt the novel was very disjointed and lacked sufficient elements to coordinate the stories of the different girls. I know from reading other reviews that many people enjoyed this book, but I’m afraid I wasn’t one of them.

Some aspects of this book are terrific. Others are not. The disjointed telling of the tale, bouncing back and forth from the past and then to the future for each character often breaks the momentum. We want to know what happened to the girls and that distracts from reading about their present lives. Some characters are better portrayed than others.

This book is beautiful and real. I felt like I got to know each character intimately, and the book went by faster than I wanted. I wanted to spend time with these characters forever.

The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore by Kim Fu is a highly recommended collection of stories that are interlinked into a novel.Camp Forevermore is a sleep-away camp for girls between the ages of nine and 11 that is located in the Pacific Northwest. In 1994 a traumatic event transformed the lives of the five girls involved. The girls, Nita, Andee, Isabel, Dina, and Siobhan, set off with a seasoned counselor on an overnight kayaking trip to a nearby island. When they make the trip in a good time, the counselor proposes they paddle on to a big island. It is on this island that the girls are faced with questions and dilemmas that will influence their adult lives. The novel jumps back and forth in time from the fateful camp experience in 1994 to the lives of the individual girls. The individual stories cover the background of the girls and follow their lives to the present day. You can see where the camp experience altered their present day lives, sometimes in a dramatic fashion. It is also clear that time changes the memories of some of the girls. The harrowing events from 1994 made an indelible mark on all of their psyches, however, the effect the incident had on some of the girls was much more daunting than it was for others. None of them were left unchanged. This novel really is a series of interlinked short stories. The chapters connecting it all are short parts of the progression of what happened to all of them in 1994. The longer chapters in-between are the stories of their individual lives. Essentially this changes the focus from 1994 and the group of girls at camp to adults who all experienced the camp event years ago. It is an interesting choice of focus, and each girl's story is told in a slightly different way, in a different angle, which seems appropriate considering the girls and their backgrounds are so different. There is no doubt about Fu's talent as a writer. The novel I read was not the novel I was expecting, but I enjoyed what she gave me enormously. I became immersed in their stories as adults, while waiting to discover exactly what happened to then as children. She writes about the girls and then women in a truthful, honest way. Yes, some of the stories and events do seem predictable, but that could be because they reflect the actual lives of women so closely. Tragedy is often woven into formative stories and so it is here. I do wish more was said of Siobhan and her life. I did want to know more of her thoughts as an adult since she figured so prominently in the 1994 passages.Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Having read Kim Fu’s prior work, I was excited to dig into this story. Fu really excels at delivering authentic-feeling characters and settings; and this has an especially interesting premise, playing out a sort of natural sociological experiment with compelling three-dimensional characters. The story’s timeline is presented in an unconventional, but very affecting way: weaving the life stories of the five lost girls amidst their traumatic childhood experience at Camp Evermore. Fu further toys with the chronology of some individual arcs (particularly that of Isabel), but it never feels gimmicky, instead adding weight to the story. Fu handles repercussions from the trauma with an appropriately light touch, with nothing feeling forced. The prose is excellent but approachable; Fu is economical with her words: expressive but accomplishing a great deal for the page-count. My wife and I both found this book difficult to put down and then had a great deal of fun discussing it afterward, despite the story’s inherent darkness. Highly recommended!

I have always been the sort of person who likes to stay in shape and stay healthy and strong, so I'm always looking for books just like this. I have to say that in this particular case, I was most definitely not disappointed by these kettlebell routines!Like a lot of people, I've never done a single thing with kettlebells before. I've seen them when I'm at the gym, but I had no idea what to do with them, so I just stuck to my normal routines, even when they got boring and repetitive. When I saw this book, I knew I had to get it. Normal gym routines can get so boring, so I wanted to shake it up a little. From the first time I tried one of these routines, I was absolutely HOOKED! Doing these exercises is unlike all of those other gym machines, it's fun and really gives you a workout!John keeps the book interesting for the whole thing, too. The formatting was totally readable on my kindle, no problem at all, so I could bring it to the gym with me. The pictures made sure that I was doing the exercises right, those illustrations were amazing!Highly recommend for people of any fitness level who want to get in shape and gain strength! Great book. I learned a ton, and not just about kettlebell exercises, but about their cool history and even about nutrition and health! Very in depth, John doesn't just toss you in, he makes sure you have everything you need to succeed.

If you are interested in kettlebell training this book is for you (you probably are since you are reading the comments section to this book). This book is a "complete guide book" that allows you to understand the ins and out of the benefits of kettlebell training. Lot of people knows the benefits of kettlebell training or have seen someone do it, but do not know how to train with kettlebell resulting in poor form, and poor result. Do yourself a favor and get this book to lay a strong foundation of kettlebell training.Warning to the beginners: This book is not end all be all book, reading alone would not allow you to obtain the body of your dream. TAKE ACTION, follow the workout, and diet plan that author lays out in the book and you will see result. Also, my recommendation is to join a gym and get a profession help to nail down the form and incorporate proper weight training as well. For all the advanced lifters, even if you were involved in fitness game for many years you still would want to get this book because with this level of detail in this book there is no reason that you will not learn something out of this book.

At my age it is hard for me to find exercises that would fit my fitness level. I started looking for an activity that would not make me tired but highly effective. I saw this book. The moment I finished reading it, I rushed to the store and purchased my own set of kettlebells. The next day I started applying the exercises. A week after, I notice the difference in my arms and thighs. The exercises are easy to follow. The book also explained the history and science behind it. I am now so addicted with this kind of physical activity. I recommended it to my wife who is years younger than me. She enjoys it too. There is a section that discuss women handling Kettlebells. I also bought her a pair. Thanks to the book I am certified kettlebell lover. My day is not complete without us training at least 30 minutes a day.

I picked up Kettlebell: The Ultimate Kettlebell Workout not knowing much about kettlebell workouts. I found the book very informative on teaching me about workouts with the kettlebell. If you are training for a sport, the book has a kettlebell workout for you. If you want to lose weight and get toned, the book has a kettlebell workout for you. The book also has links to many videos that teach about the proper use of the kettlebell. One of the things that I really liked about the book was how the author stressed the importance of safety with the kettlebell by doing the movements with correct form. The book is well formatted and has numerous photos to keep you interested. Overall I found the book to be quite useful and I would recommend it.

I have done a lot of workout types but I was never really sure on Kettlebell workouts, Thats why I decided to purchase this book. So far I must say, the programs within the book are great and have helped me so much. I feel like my arms have grown twice the size and my core is getting pretty darn tight. The illustrations in the book teach you all the steps you need and especially important is to avoid injury. The layout of the book serves to be used by the reader and the programs are all in there just waiting to be started. When your ready, the fun begins.I like the way John Powers has written this book, its easy to learn from yet advanced to master. The programs start of simple and effective yet the more you do them, the harder they get and before you know it your lifting like the toughest guys you know. This book deserves 5 stars purely for the information in it on kettlebell training. I'm glad I bought it.

I really love kettlebells. They have changed how I exercise. I have exercised all my life with the exception of an extended period when my kids were small and doing so impacted their health negatively. Such as the time I tae bowed my daughter in the head. Recently I noticed that I was losing my ability to bounce back from small injuries so I figured I needed to find an exercise that could get me strong in a short period of time. Kettlebells have fit the bill. I am always looking for new books to increase my knowledge. This book is a great resource. It has a lot of information, especially about performing moves correctly. This is very important especially with this form of exercise. I recommend this book to anyone interested in kettlebell training.

I NEED ANOTHER BOOK.It feels like it’s been ages since I read a faerie book, and a good one at that. Though I’m sure I’ve read some since then, the only ones that come to mind are Holly Black’s Tithe/Modern Faerie Tales series and Melissa Marr’s Wicked Lovely series (both of which are some of my favorite books in general).I am absolutely adding An Enchantment of Ravens to that list!Let’s start with the magic. Well, sort of magic. In this world, it’s called Craft, only usable by humans. Think of talents like painting, writing, cooking, sewing, and so on. These humans work their Craft in Whimsy where the Fair Folk come to visit them and purchase their Craft in exchange for enchantments. I loved the idea of Craft. It just felt fresh and new and while I’m sure it’s been done before, not in any book I’ve read and I thought it was a great addition to the inclusion of the Fair Folk in the book.Isobel’s Craft is portrait painting, once again making for a stand-out element. She’s strong-willed and loyal to her family, willing to do what it takes to keep them safe. You won’t see Isobel putting up with any nonsense. Her practical nature (even when it appears at more impractical times) made her endearing and I just loved her character in general. Then there’s Rook. Ugh, can someone just wrap him in a warm blanket and give him a hug? This absolutely over-the-top prince is such a sweetheart and you can’t help but love him. He’s stubborn and him and Isobel end up at odds often enough but who can stay mad at that face? I think what worked really well for him was the way Rogerson treated his interaction with “human” things (like emotions). He’s just so raw and genuine about everything. I need more Rook!Together, they journeyed through the Fair Folk courts, on the run. I didn’t find their journey itself anything remarkable but I found I didn’t care either. I read for the characters who I loved almost instantly, and the writing which is very well executed and will immediately suck you in.My only complaint (other than I simply didn’t want it to end) was that the ending itself felt a TAD rushed. But that might just be me and my new obsession with this book.Honestly, I am in DESPERATE NEED of some sort of a sequel or companion novel or ANYTHING (I’d take word scraps on a napkin if I could). This book is all sorts of perfect for fans who’ve been missing that classic fae style with a new twist. You won’t be able to get enough of An Enchantment of Ravens.I’m just all sorts of gushing right now, y’all. This book just rocked my YA fantasy list and if you don’t have it on your to-read shelf then there’s something wrong so get on that! Can’t wait for more by this author!

I was thrilled to finally get my hands on Margaret Rogerson’s debut novel, An Enchantment of Ravens. Often described as the “perfect fall read,” it truly is, with lush, magical scenery and an adventure reminiscent of a fairy tale. I probably could have read it in a day or two, but it was such a pleasure that I tried to make it last as long as possible, delaying the inevitable end. I found myself wishing for more books with these characters, but according to Rogerson, this book was written as a standalone. (If she changes her mind, though, I’ll take any glimpse of Whimsy and the fairylands that I can get!)I love the world Rogerson has created, from the peculiar town of Whimsy to the alluring and dangerous fairylands. Fans of Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses series may find the fairy courts in this book — spring, summer, fall, and winter — reminiscent of those described in her trilogy. But I found the depiction of the fair ones to be more dangerous and haunting. While they are, in some ways, similar to fey found in other YA books, Rogerson shows that their legendary beauty is built on a lie, and their love of mischief and trickery runs deep. I found Isobel to be a likeable, realistic protagonist, with conflicted emotions and a soul-deep sense of duty to her family. And where do I begin with Rook? In some ways, he fits the archetype of the rude, stubborn love interest who eventually grows to love his equally-stubborn companion. But it was such a delight to see his interactions with Isobel change and deepen. He’s definitely book boyfriend material. There were parts of the book that felt a little predictable. It’s not difficult to imagine how it ends before it even happens. But again, much like a fairy tale, that predictability comes with the story: a handsome fairy prince whisks a lovely human girl away, and during their journey, they fall in love. I still thoroughly enjoyed this book and the way it went about telling that story. While the concept is something we’ve seen before, the writing is sharp and engaging. I also had a few lingering questions at the end of the book, but despite wanting answers, I can appreciate it when an author leaves some details to the reader’s imagination.Overall, I think this was a strong debut, and it really is a wonderful book to curl up with. Make some tea, grab a cozy blanket, and lose yourself in the forests with Isobel and Rook.
