Some people don't like the history included, but I think it makes it all the more real. Arryn Graham is a Scottish laird who is destined to fight with William Wallace and others at Stirling Bridge, which comes towards the end of the book. Battle scenes are very realistic, so caution if you're squeamish. Arryn captures a castle being held by his arch enemy, Lord Kinsey Darrow, a British nobleman who had previously captured Arryn's keep, murdered his family and burnt his home to the ground. (This was a technique of the British). Arryn plans to hold the castle and claim Darrow's betrothed, Kyra, as his own in revenge. Of course, as these stories go, Arryn is emotionally captured himself, by the brave and beautiful Kyra, half Scot, half English. She has been betrothed to Darrow, but she hates him. Arryn is at first very cold toward her, but he finds that she had nothing to do with the attack on his home or the murder of his family, and through the progression of the plot, their love grows. It is at times an agonizing tale, but it seems to capture a lot of the anguish of Scottish history.

I'm giving this book a three-star rating for one reason and one reason only. I know there are many out there that love story engrossed in actual historical events. I like a book to be historically accurate I love it when another 10 intertwine their story with the events that actually accrued. The problem I have with this particular book is I felt like I was in a history lesson. It felt like I was being schooled and I ended up skimming quite a bit. There was often several pages of inner dialogue about the historical events and meaning of them that, to me, stop the forward momentum of the story. Some people love story that is filled with historical references and is historically accurate. I like the story to be historically accurate and I like historical references but I felt like it took over the book in this case. I still like the book even though I ended up skimming through a lot of the history lessons, it was a decent read.

This was Book 2 and took place in 1297. There is romance and conflict between the hero and heroine. It is the time period of the rebellion led by William Wallace for Scottish independence. It is explained from the Scottish point of view and describes the treachery and loyalty of various Scottish and English leaders. It is very exciting.Shannon Drake has also provided a Timeline History of how men came to the Britain from many different sources and countries. She explains what actually happened and when. Such as the Stone of Scone being removed to London and how William Wallace was betrayed and what happened to him.The history does not slow down or stop the romance from flowing. It is the romance that ties it all together.

I found the second book to the Graham Family series to be the best. The hero (Arryn Graham) is driven by vengeance for the death of his wife. In the story he takes the man's castle (Kinsey Darrow) and his betrothed (Kyra) who is rumored to be behind the killing. This is not the case. The heroine is desperate to flee Darrow as much as Arryn is desperate to kill him. So the goes: Arryn takes the castle, rapes Kyra, and then the evidentially fall in love. At the end Kyra is captured by Darrow, he attempts to hang her for opening the gates to the Scotts but in the end Arryn saves the day. All in all a great story.

Heather Graham did a very good job of writing this book. She didn't overpower the reader with too much violence and sexual content. She used the right combination of the two while allowing the reader a glimpse into the history of the time period.

Arryn lives for revenge and to serve William Wallace, Scotland’s great hope for freedom.Arryn comes to Seacairn Castle to take both it and it’s lady, Kyra, betrothed to the English brute Kinsey Darrow. Arryn hates Darrow for his rape and murder of Arryn’s wife and the burning of his home and the Scottish people.Despite fighting him at every turn, Kyra eventually gives in to his lovemaking. She is torn between her loyalty to the Edward, the English king, and her growing affection for the hard man who leads the Scots that have taken her castle. She is half-Scot, half-English, caught between two warring peoples. King Edward is determined to own all of Britain and he cares not what cruel tactics his men use against the Scots.This is the second in a series of Graham's historical novels of the Graham clan in Scotland. This one is set in the 13th century when Alexander III was King of Scotland (he dies in the prologue) and Edward reigns in England. I love Graham's writing and the fact she does deep research to bring the history to life. She does a great job of keeping the action going, drawing you in and keeping the sexual tension high.Arryn is a man with a tortured soul who must overcome the hatred he feels for Kinsey to find love with Kyra. She is an honorable and courageous and gradually wins the hearts of Arryn's men. Eventually, she wins Arryn, too. I read one part of this trilogy in paperback and loved it. When I found "Conquer" on kindle - I was thrilled. However, the spelling errors are so bad you almost have to guess at what they are trying to say. It is unfortunate. It takes so much time to comprehend what the word should have been, it has become a game. For example, most every "the" is spelled as "die". So it becomes "die caste" instead of "the castle". I can't concentrate on the story. Pass on this one on kindle - at least until the errors are fixed. Try it in paperback; Shannon Drake is a very good writter. - hopefully it will be better. I am giving up.

what a great Book..I read over 1000 romance books over time..mostly Historical and Paranormal romance..I read good ones and not so good ones.....this will be a keeper..well done..give it a try

Quite an interesting take on accident investigation and understanding human error. The paradigm of the investigator placing themselves "inside the tunnel" to avoid hindsight bias is a powerful metaphor.Some of the chapters get to be a bit hard going - with lots of restating the basic tenet of Old View vs New View though.All in all - quite thought provoking and worth a read.

Found the book interesting and helpful. In am in Process Safety and it made me think about how I do HAZOPs and PHAs. This version is better organized than revision 2.

Many of the articles contained in this book make little or no reference to the location of these bastions of contemporary sculpture. The pictures and descriptions are so vivid that you want to run out and see what has been described but seldom do you have an accurate idea of where they are. Still, if you have an interest in contemporary art the content is worth the time spent in puzzling out if they are near or far. An indexing of the contents would be very helpful and being able to locate artists and parks would add greatly to the value of the information given.

We choose our weekend and vacation getaways with this book. Being a sculptor myself, I really enjoy walking a sculpture park every chance I get. Well wrtten, this guide peaks my interest and excites me about my travels. If you travel and like art, you need this book.

If you are an environmental artist or large scale outdoor sculptor and don't know your Sculpture parks this is an awesome book to read.Very inspiring for me as an artist and good information about the variety of parks both nationally and internationally.

This is a wonderful book that is based on the life of Margaret Fishback, the highest paid advertising copywriter for R H Macy’s during the 1930s. In this book, the protagonist Lillian Boxfish, at the age of 84, decides to walk to a fancy restaurant, the Delmonico’s on New Year’s Eve, 1984. There she meets Kathy and her daughter, Penny. Lillian arrives without a reservation, but Kathy, a stranger, overhears the waiter rejecting Lillian, and invites her to her table. Lilian changes her mind after dinner and decides to walk on to her young friend, Wendy’s New Year’s Eve party. It is a long walk from her home in Murray Hill, New York, a city she loves dearly. Along the way to Wendy’s home, Lillian recalls the story of her life, from the time she moved to New York, to her job at Macy’s, marrying her husband, and his divorcing her; and of her love for walking and writing. Hers is a story of life and how to grasp it, and how to regain it when it slips away from you. It is a moving account of a feisty old lady who tells us how feisty she was when young; that even America in the 1930s could not bump a woman of drive and ability off the road. This passage illustrates the wit and charm of Rooney’s book: ‘“Love, Olive, is not what I scoff at,” I said. “What I scoff at is rank sentimentalism: the silly idea of love that advertisers – including us – use to sell everything from soup to soap to subjugation. As for the city, Olive, I live here because I like it.”“You like it because it’s fashionable.”“No, Olive,” I said. “I like it for the same reason that it’s fashionable. Namely, that it is pretty swell.”’ I do not know if this book has won any prizes, but it clearly deserves one.

Lillian is a wonderful woman - a symbol of a wide-eyed young professional in the 30's, a woman who put off marriage until her true love sold her a rug, a mom who loved her son dearly, but who could not be all to her, a woman who loved life, had endless curiosity, and a woman who worked through a terrible time when all seemed lost. From start to finish, this book kept me involved and I was sorry it ended. How I would have liked to spend some time walking and talking with Lillian in her NYC!

The first time I read Lillian Boxfish Takes a Walk I had fun tweeting out clever lines, starring and underlining passages. Then, because I was so smitten with the book, with Lillian’s story, with Kathleen Rooney’s voice, I had to share it, so gave my book to an up-and-coming young female writer who I thought would appreciate the proto-feminist heroine, the smart plotting, the zinging humor. Thus, I no longer have my underlined copy and must start anew to refresh my memory.This is a happy burden, since it’s such a delicious read and succeeds on every level. It’s the story of a woman taking a ten-mile New Year’s Eve walk through 1980’s New York, and bumping into her 1930’s past along the way. It’s a love story that turns tragic. It’s a story that frames the tension between work and parenting. It’s a portrait of a lovely friendship between two ‘career’ women when they were the exception, not the rule. Women who would complete the truism: LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND, with this witticism—or truerism: THEN IT MAKES THE WORLD GO FLAT. Women I’d like to know, and felt I did, reading Rooney’s book.Perhaps it should be no surprise that Lillian Boxfish was inspired by a genuine figure, the highest paid advertising woman of her time, Margaret Fishback. Who, however highly paid, still got lower wages than lesser men. As it is, as it always has been. Perhaps, as it won’t always be, with such eloquent champions as Rooney.But Lillian Boxfish is much more than an “inspired-by” tale spoon-feeding us social history. Because Rooney is such a talented writer, it doesn’t matter if Lillian grew out of history or the author’s fertile imagination. She’s a full and ferocious heroine who will make you laugh out loud, will make you cringe when she’s hurt and will make you cheer when she lands a literary punch. Read it.

Based on the previous reviews I bought this book. As I started reading it I wasn't sure I liked it but I am very glad I pressed on as it turned out to be a delightful, charming book which is loosely based on an advertising women from the thirties. It is evident that the author has extensive knowledge of the English language as she uses many words I am unfamiliar with (or perhaps I'm just not as well versed as I thought I was). Even so, it all fit and worked. It really is an enchanting read.

I’d read some reviews before purchasing this book that said it was boring, and others who found it reminiscent of New York City. So I was surprised to find that this book was about a woman’s personal path and growth, from a new, young college graduate wanting to experience city living, maiden, mother, crone. I thought the author did a really good job of pealing back the story, bit by bit. Unfortunately, I found the story captivating, so when I would read it at 2 a.m, I couldn’t put it down until 4 a.m, which was not good for my work week - but very satisfying.I think this book may appeal most to people who have moved to new locations, tried a challenging professional role, balanced motherhood and a career, and have had to wake up one day as a mature woman instead of a “cute something”, or who has thought herself hardened, only to find she is tender and vulnerable

Love Barrett, Lincoln and Graham. I'm actually re-reading since Adriana made these into two box sets. These are incredible stories. The politician, the baseball player and the business man. Two Playboy's and one that's very guarded. Beautifully written stories. Definitely recommend Sway, Swing and Switch.

This family is one of my favorite in the book world. Every single one of these men and women had made me crying, blushing like crazy, enjoying each and every single sizzling, hot and sexy moment and most off all they plastered a smile on my face long after I had read the words THE END!I LOVE THE LANDRY's <3

I really adored this collection of books. This is the first 3 books in the Landry family series. And the Landry family are absolutely one of the best families I've read about in awhile. I Loved the couples and their stories and toy won't go wrong with these sweet romantic stories.

Love the Landry family bonds!Barrett,Allison and Huxley are great together!Lincoln is sexy and a flirt but wins Dani over!Graham is a sexy control freak that met his match with Mallory.

But dear author stop creating hedonistic men, por favor. I was aiming for Graham's story, but I think Lincoln's was the best of all of them. :-)

I love stories that take you through ranges of emotions. And this series does that and then some. Now on to part two!
