About the Author
Capt. Franz Von Riedel has spent his life persistently documenting the complex histories of the commercial vessels in the maritime industry. Upon graduation from high school, Franz spent five years as conductor on an iron ore railroad in Northern Minnesota. From 1997–2000, he restored and operated the Marine Trader, the last commercial bumboat in North America. In 2001, Franz formed the Zenith Tugboat Company, which today owns and operates seven towing vessels. He founded the Northeastern Maritime Historical Foundation in 2002, which has become one of the prime contributors to the preservation of the towing industry, in its history and the vessels themselves. Besides his time-consuming business interests centered around the maritime industry, Franz is an avid industrial photographer and has had thousands of images published throughout the United States and Europe. Franz also writes the "News from North America" feature in the bi-monthly international publication Lekko.

Bought it as a gift and recipient loved it.
A great collection of pics and the info to go with them. A tireless love of tugboats drove Von Riedel to find all of these boats and get the best shots he could, along with the story of their pasts. As the grandson of a 'laker wheelsman, I always loved tugs and couldn't wait for Winter layup or Spring ice out to watch them at work in Milwaukee's Menominee River Vy., as Grampa Pete either returned home from the season's trips, or huffed and puffed up the gangway for the next season after a winter of Camels and Pabst Blue ribbon.
The book has lots of interesting photos by the author and other collections. The author WAS in a tugboat operation (unsuccessful, failed, bankrupt, wanted by authorities, and in hiding)for a short while in the Duluth and East coast. Many of the tugs in the book are now unfortunatly either gone to the scrapper or to the bottom. The book gets confusing because tugs change names, paint schemes and owners without the author identifying consistantly the changes through the time sequence. Still an interesting read.
THIS BOOK IS A HIGHLY COMPREHENSIVE STUDY WITH GREAT PHOTOS,INTERESTING HISTORIES AND A VERY READER FRIENDLY STYLE.THIS IS A MUST HAVE FOR ANYONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN SEAFARING,SEA LORE,AND/OR THE MARITIME HISTORY OF THE GREAT LAKES.
Beautifull fotos! Too bad only black and white. Very rich material for those who love tugs!
This is a fantastic collection of tugboats that are still in use and some that are not. Von Riedel has taken it upon himslf to capture those still sailing and those still remembered in action on our fresh water lakes. Historical perspective, excellent photography and a high quality collection of tugs and their role on the inland seas. A must have for any boat afficianado!
VonRiedel's knowledge of the Great Lakes towboat industry is impressive to say the least - and he writes in a style that is both informative and easy to read. The book is filled with interesting bits of first-hand knowledge about different types of Lake tugs, and includes hundreds of photos, both color and b/w, many from unusual or 'hard to get access to' locations. Tugboats of the Great Lakes is excellent read, well worth the money.
