I enjoyed this book tremendously in parts but not so much in other parts. His wonderful wit and intelligence are always present. And his humor and outlook on life is right there on the surface. However, for me there was something about George Carlin's presentation of his material in person that made it work for me more effectively than the printed word did. He was so "in your face" with it. You could not possibly misunderstand or pretend to not see all the layers of the world beneath his wisdom. His use of words and appreciation of language are so phenomenal (and that does show through in the book almost as well as in person). When he is on stage he is somehow everyman. In the book I felt he was trying too hard. It did not work as well for me. Sometimes he sounds too forced and strident. This was never true when he was on stage.
I feel like I need to start by saying that I read the entire book. Seems a lot of people think it's OK to write a review after reading the first 20 pages, flipping through it at a bookstore, or just reading the cover. There should be a rule.I've read all of Carlin's books and have been a fan since "7 Words." This is not his funniest book, but it is still classic Carlin. He is angry, vulgar and sophomoric, that's what he does, and sometimes that's just what you need. He can be angry and complain so that I don't have to. For me, reading Carlin is like a sedative that's absorbed through the eyeballs.Sometimes his observations and rantings are truely genius, sometimes what he has to say is about as deep as my 8-year-old. If you are easily offended by vulgarity, strong opinions that may differ from your own or the rantings of an irritated man, then this book isn't for you.It appears, from reading other reviews, that some people who consider themselves Christians, were offended by this book. Carlin is not "...challenging Christian views and beliefs," as one reviewer said, he's simply making fun of you. That's what he does, that's what he's always done. To expect something else isn't realistic. If you are a Christian and understand that Freedom of Religion also means Freedom FROM Religion, then you will not be offended by this book.And finally, it's been suggested that we should not buy this book because it is simply the "rantings of a drug addict." If you agree, then don't buy this book, and also get rid of all your Hemmingway, Fitzgerald, Poe, O'Henry, King, Sinclair Lewis, Jack London, Dylan Thomas and Stephen Crane as well. You wouldn't want to be a hypocrite, right? If you actually understand the nature of addiction then you'll know it doesn't matter in your selection of this book.
When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops lives up to the title in that it's funny, ridiculous, and unexpected at times. Carlin's last book is a bit darker than his previous ones and also discusses a lot of things about language and how we use it incorrectly. Again, the book is random in its subject matter but if you know Carlin you can predict some of the things he will bash on. The title alone pokes fun at three separate religions. Take a break from thick novels about war, or thin, pointless novels written by an author who is only selling his name, and give George Carlin a try.
Keep in mind I am thoroughly impressed with George Carlin.. I love his humor and philosophy of life. this book has some good material although it is always funnier with George's delivery of course.
a must read for any delinquent
Bypass any feelings you may have about the title. This isn't an attack on Christianity, folks, but one guy's take on life, touching on such topics as how words evolved over time, the language of football compared to baseball and other intriguing aspects of our culture. Carlin knows we're all a little nuts (or would it be better to say we're "quirky" or "eccentric")? His genius is exposing our peculiarities, forcing us to think about the oddities in the world, especially when it comes to human reasoning and logic. So why all the controversy over this book? Is it just the title? Looking at the world from Carlin's perspective, even if it is just for an afternoon or two, doesn't have to be threatening...and you don't have to stick around for the ride if you get too uncomfortable.
Excellent satire
while you are still trying to digest the last one. Good read, pleased I ordered it now on to the next book!
