About the Author
Antoine de Saint-Exupery (1900-1944) was born in Lyons, France. He wrote The Little Prince in the United States during a two-year self-imposed exile from occupied France. A year after the book’s publication in 1943, Saint-Exupery disappeared over the Mediterranean while flying a reconnaissance mission for his French air squadron. Best known throughout the world as the author and illustrator of The Little Prince, Saint-Exupery wrote several other books that also have become classics of world literature. Viggo Mortensen is an artist mostly known for his acting work in movies like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, A Dangerous Method, Eastern Promises, The Road, A History of Violence, and Alatriste, to name a few of his more recent projects. Later this year he will appear in Walter Salles' adaptation of Jack Kerouac's On The Road and in Ana Piterbarg's Todos Tenemos Un Plan. He has also taken part in various recordings of poetry, short stories, and music. These include readings of Jack Kerouac's On The Road journals for the New Yorker Out Loud series, of his own introduction for Houghton Mifflin's The Best American Nonrequired Reading 2004, as well as numerous poetry and music recordings from his own Perceval Press label, including Canciones de Invierno, Reunion, and Time Waits for Everyone. In addition to his film and recording work, Mortensen has published several books of poetry and photography, and has exhibited his photographs and paintings in galleries and museums in the U.S., Iceland, Denmark, Cuba and New Zealand.

I purchased this 70th anniversary gift set in honor of St. Exupery, since I taught this book for years as a means of teaching allegory to high school students. However, I used the MUCH superior Katherine Woods translation.This anniversary set is an insult to both St. Exupery and the Little Prince himself. I was excited that Viggo Mortensen had done the audio, but when I listened to and read the very first page, I closed up this set and will not even give it to a friend.Howard hasn't just simplified the text, he has destroyed it. Substituting the word "excuse" for "reason" in the famous dedication to Leon Werth is appalling. And to change "primeval forest" (Woods) to "jungle" is ludicrous.In addition, while Mortensen certainly has a great voice, his inflection is so flat that I can't imagine hearing the whole book read this way.I am not just disappointed in this product; I'm also appalled that whoever chose this translation would give such little credit to the reader. Woods' translation is as close to the original French as possible.I'll simply copy here some comments from a very astute person, Allie Jones, whose insight is spot on:"Katherine Woods' simple and beautiful translation is the only one that does justice to The Little Prince. Published by Harcourt in 1943 and 1971, her translation is the essential --- the translation loved and quoted by English-speaking people around the world, even by members of English- and French-speaking Canadian Parliament! But hers is OUT OF PRINT, so snatch up used copies while you may!WARNING: the "new translation" by Richard Howard purges meaning, and is not worth the money. It gives a falseness to one of the most sincere stories ever written.Howard's lacks beauty, and is at times unintelligible: It simply does not make sense. Since Howard has no apparent understanding of the truths expressed in The Little Prince, it is not to be wondered at....Amazon.com's Editorial Review on HOWARD'S translation says that "Katherine Woods sometimes wandered off the mark, giving the text a slightly wooden or didactic accent. Happily, Richard Howard...has streamlined and simplified to wonderful effect."This would have been better written thus:"Katherine Woods uses poetic devices and a didactic accent to wonderful effect, capturing the essence and meaning of Antoine de Saint Exupéry's classic tale in a timeless translation. Unhappily and unfortunately, Richard Howard...has streamlined and simplified in a words-only translation, and he wanders off the mark, obscuring what were otherwise truths both simple and profound, giving the text a wooden effect."Why on EARTH was the Howard translation chosen!!! Both as an English teacher and a parent I'm extremely disappointed!
I'm not certain how I came across this one, but apparently, it is well-known and the most translated book in the French language. I do not recall ever having this one read to me as a child or even hearing of it until recently.The author, Antoine De Saint-Exupéry, was born in 1900. He was a famous pioneer of commercial aviation, flew in two wars, survived two separate crashes, and wound up disappearing in 1944 while flying a reconnaissance mission.The story, an allegorical tale and what many consider to be autobiographical, is about a pilot who crashes in the desert and is visited by a Little Prince.The Little Prince is a unique character who comes from a very small planet, so small that there's barely enough room for his special flower.The Little Prince visits with our downed pilot and shares stories of his home planet and some of his travels to 6 other planets where he encountered different kinds of "grown-ups" that he had a hard time relating to because "grown-ups" just don't seem to understand.It's a challenge for me to write this review because you just have to read it yourself to really "get it." It's a great little story and I purchased the 70th anniversary limited edition that comes with CD's with Viggo Mortensen telling the tale.This edition has 151 reviews on Amazon with a 4.7 rating and Goodreads shows a 4.28 rating with an astounding 841,628 ratings and 23,820 reviews. Reading the reviews is interesting too because there are different translations over the years and many argue as to the quality of the different versions. This is definitely one for the library for the little ones and it's great for the "grown-ups" too! First, let’s begin with the print book. It is tasteful and artistic, and the outer cover uses some classic illustrations. The inside of the book should look familiar to most who have already read the book, and the pages have a nice glossy feel to them. It is almost like reading a picture book.The secondary compartment contains a CD with an audiobook of the text. Perhaps in a reprint, a digital download code would be suitable as it would allow people to listen to the book on their smartphones more easily. With some software, the CD can be encoded into an iTunes format audiobook (m4b). Specifically, Audiobook Builder by Splasm is a great program to simplify this. But I digress. Viggo Mortenson’s narration is captivating, and very enjoyable.This makes a great gift, either to someone else, or to you, or to the child you once were.
Bought two of these as a part of gifts for a friends young child and my own nephew. This is one of the great stories for parents to read to their kids. It's great because while it teaches the child hearing it a lot of great lessons it also teaches the adult reading it about the value of thinking and being like a child.I can't speak to the translation here like others have but it came in good condition and with the audio book narrated by Vigo Mortinsen. I thought it made for a great gift and for the price would definitely recommend it.
Though it took me about a year to come here to post the feed back, there is a point. It's been a very long time and my children still ask me to turn it on in the car or before bed. It is a universal story with a great cover and good quality sound of the cdthank you
Very nice presentation, very nice CD and Book package. Very nice story. However, I'm no so font of Viggo Mortensen as the Narrator. His voice tone is too low, some passages I had to turn the volume up to hear him very well, I was expecting the narration to have a more dynamic delivery, is almost as his voice stays in just this one level of quietness that at times makes me think of sadness.
