From the Inside Flap

Front Flap             In Forty Acres and a Fool, Roger Welsch condenses thirty-plus-years of experience learning about country life the hard way into one indispensable volume. In these pages you’ll learn how not to insult the locals the way Rog did. How not to get ripped off the way Rog did. How not to torque off the neighbors the way Rog did. How not to put your house in the wrong place the way Rog did. How not to… well, you get the point. When Welsch first bought a place near the small town of Dannebrog, Nebraska (pop. 352) in 1975, no one had yet written a book to inform him how not to do things. Hence he ventured forth into this brave new rural world and proceeded to do a whole bunch of things he should not have done.             But he learned from his mistakes, maybe even more so than if he had done it right the first time. Eventually he developed an expertise at the elusive art of country living that rivals that of his neighbors, people who had lived on the same plats of land their entire lives. In these pages he shares what he learned from his mistakes. Back Flap             Roger Welsch can best be described as a cross between Erma Bombeck and Dr. Ruth, except male and living in Nebraska with his wife and dogs. Before turning his talents to canine psychology, Roger was best known as “the fat guy in overalls” on CBS’ Sunday Morning, where he offered up essays on rural and small-town life on the plains.             Many also know him as the fat guy with the fetish for old tractors, as an advocate for Native American interests, and as the second most prominent citizen of Dannebrog, Nebraska, (pop. 352).             He’s also an author of numerous books of fiction and folk humor, and writes for publications from Successful Farming to Reader’s Digest.

I've been a fan of Roger Welsch ever since I came across his 'Rusty Knuckles and Busted Tractors' some years back. I've bought a few more of his titles, and some are funnier than others, but all are well written and and a pleasurable journey. This one is a very honest look at moving to The Country, with his special brand of wry humor. Another keeper, though perhaps not as hysterical as the tractors?

Book reviews are partly about the book and partly about the reviewer. Apparently I had a misconception of what this book would be. I thought (hoped) it would be sort of in the style of Green Acres, a farsical tale of the city boy gone country. Nope! This is a serious, painstakingly tedious tome on identifying and following an action plan for the previously uninitiated to move to the country. I personally moved from a life in cities to s very rural setting about 20 years ago. I hoped this book would have me chuckling at adventures and misadventures of the author following a similar migration. Instead, I read the author's blueprint for meticulously making such a move. So, if this is a serious topic for you, please read this book and leave your review from that perspective. On the upbeat note, this book was a great sleep aid.

A charming dose of reality that helps the reader justify his/her foolish decision to live a self-sustaining country life. There is much to learn from this memoir about the basics of relocating to the country. As someone who grew up in a small town and has always lived a country life, I found it accurate, very funny, and an invaluable resource. My favorite tip was Welsch's suggestion for dealing with neighboring farmers who repeatedly refuse to restrain their roving livestock. I won't spoil the story by giving away the punchline, but Julia Child would be proud.

Very good advice, love his humor. (I wonder how many "get" the twist of his title?) If you are considering "getting back to nature", read this book first; it will either fire you up to do it, or make you realize you are not cut out for it! It ain't all fun & games!Since we live a few miles down the road from him, I know exactly what he is talking about when he describes the land. But for those who are far away, his descriptions are vivid enough you'll get it!

ok

Dry, understated humor with lots and lots of practical advice about moving to a small town, from someone who's done it.

if there is the slightest chance you want to move from the city into rural America, you should read this book

Excellent book. Very happy I purchased it. Has a unique vintage/retro look. Was better than I expected. An honest account of life in the country and all the pitfalls and pleasures that go with it!
