MacArthur's Spies: The Soldier, the Singer, and the Spymaster Who Defied the Japanese in World War II, by Peter Eisner

Review

“It’s a barn-burner of a story, a fight for love and glory, and Eisner’s impeccable research and reporting bring it to life. Here’s looking at you, Claire.” —Washington Post“A well-researched, entertaining, and informative look at the resistance to the Japanese occupation.” —Publishers Weekly  “Peter Eisner does a masterful job of telling the colorful, largely unknown story of an intrepid array of Americans in the Philippines who evaded capture by the Japanese in World War II and helped mount a powerful resistance movement against them. A sultry nightclub owner in Manila and a businessman who used his cover as a Central American consul to spy on the Japanese are just two members of a fabulous cast of characters that could have come straight from a Graham Greene novel.”--Lynne Olson, author of Citizens of London and Last Hope Island"MacArthur's Spies reads like Casablanca set in the Pacific, filled with brave and daring characters caught up in the intrigue of war—and the best part is that it's all true! With great historical detective work and narrative grace, Peter Eisner opens our eyes to the amazing story of Claire Phillips. Inside her shadowy Manila nightclub, Claire masterminded a spy ring that outfoxed Japanese invaders and helped America win World War II when all seemed lost. This is a spy story about a remarkable woman who, through her own cunning and considerable charm with the men in her life, manages to survive—a triumph of the human spirit."  —Thomas Maier, author of Masters of Sex and When Lions Roar: The Churchills and the Kennedys. “Peter Eisner has mastered the art of bringing history alive by finding-and telling-the story within the story.  He has done it again with this thrilling tale of deception, romance, and physical endurance set against the backdrop of World War II in the Pacific.  Memorable characters, exotic locales, realistic dialogue, extraordinarily high stakes—this book has the ingredients of a great spy novel.  Plus: it all actually happened.” --Michael Dobbs, author of Six Months in 1945: From World War to Cold War and One Minute to MidnightPraise for The Freedom Line:"Exciting and highly readable . . . Written with an eye for characterization and vivid detail and a sense of immediacy and moral commitment. . . Eisner has given us an exhilarating account of harrowing danger, betrayal and heroism, one with a hint of romance and with the ultimate triumph of freedom and justice."—The Washington Post

This is a superbly written book, one that demonstrates the strength of an investigative reporter's ability to both pursue the facts and then write in a manner that keeps the reader turning pages. Eisner has captured both a period of history, the difficult choices people unexpectedly had to make when they find themselves in the face of war, and the many facets of what turns an imperfect person into an American heroine. That it takes place in the Philippines today--with all of its political and moral values in question, only further underscores its value. Worth reading by all ages, as an inspiration of what we each need to do now.

Peter Eisner has written an engrossing, action-packed narrative that brings to life a tale that finally got the storyteller it deserves. You will never forget Claire Phillips, Chick Parsons, John Boone and all the other heroes revealed in this mile-a-minute account. If you are intrigued by history as it was lived by those caught in its currents this will be your book of the year!

Claire Phillips, an American singer, spied on Japanese officers in the Philippines during WW2 from her Manila nightclub. She is a strong, courageous, and flawed heroine so popular in movies today. Wife, widow, mother, friend, patriot. Willful, stubborn, loyal, and fiercely brave, I wish more people knew her true story. I loved reading about the brave soldiers, civilians, and guerrillas who resisted the Japanese in the Philippines during WWII and hope someone makes a movie of this book someday! Meticulously researched, this book illustrates the complicated history of the U.S. in the Philippines, particularly during WWII and the events leading up to it.

Peter Eisner's new book is an exciting example of historically authentic drama. The stage is set in the Japanese occupied Philippines during WWII. True life characters grow heroically into their roles in the resistance. In a readable cinematic exposition Eisner puts us in the scenes. We are left closer to the complexities and passions of life during the adversities and pains of wartime. Also, a little closer to understanding the price they individually paid.

Very detailed, insightful book examining an almost unknown part of WWII. It elaborated and confirmed many of the "stories" I have heard from two of my uncle who fought in the Pacific from 1942-1945. readers can not help appreciating the great research done by the author and the skillful way the narrative was brought together.

A very good account of the efforts of anti-Japanese guerilla activities during the occupation of the Philippines. Some of the individuals mentioned were personal friends of my family so I heard some of the stories first hand from the people involved. I can attest to the veracity of all the events.

I am a history buff who had little knowledge of API in WWll.The author wove so much history in the biography of Claire's participation in spying on the Japanese.I read this book over 2 month time span because the plot was not gripping. However, I was rewarded with a better understanding ofMacArthur and the war leading to the liberation of PI.

As a WWII war buff particular in the Pacific Theater, like me this is new to me.
