I teach 2nd grade in Ohio and have been feeling the stress of our state's teacher evaluation system and the constant testing. I have followed Tim on facebook and was intrigued by what happens in schools in Finland. As soon as I saw that he had written a book, I knew I had to have it! I read Teach Like Finland in 2 evenings after 2 long days of teaching. I could NOT put it down! After the first night, I decided to try something as simple as giving my kids fresh air breaks each hour. I was amazed at the difference in behavior and focus after these breaks. The kids enjoyed their breaks and asked if we could do the fresh air breaks next week. I can't wait for next week when I allow my kids more freedom in their research projects and having their help in planning our Force and Motion unit. I told my principal, other teachers in my school, and friends that work with future teachers about this book and many have already ordered it! T has been a long time since I have been this excited about a professional book!

Aimed at elementary school teachers, a lot of this book is common sense and practice in most American schools already. I was hoping for something more—a strategy I could easily add to my middle school classroom. Instead I got a lot of info about a student centered choice based classroom, which is common in most classrooms in my school and certainly was the focus of my graduate degree

About the Author

Mercer Mayer began writing and illustrating children's books in 1966, and since that time, he has published over 300 titles. Open almost any of the award-winning author/illustrator's books, and out may pop dragons, cuddly monsters, wonderful creatures, and endearing critters. "Most of my books are about things that happened to me when I was a little kid," says Mercer. "Now that I'm a big kid, I write about things that happen now, especially with my own children. They always help remind me of what it was like." Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mercer Mayer spent his childhood hunting lizards and snakes in the swamps near his home. During his teenage years, he attended the Honolulu Academy of Arts. He later received additional training at the Art Students League in New York City. Upon completion of his studies, he set out with pen and ink to write and illustrate a collection of children's books, reflecting many of the adventures he experienced as a child. In 2007, Mr. Mayer was commissioned by Laura Bush to create the artwork used for the National Book Festival held on September 29 on the National Mall. He was an honored guest to the event, giving a demonstration and autographing hundreds of books for fans who attended.

Great book for targeting language, as there are no words. The kids can make up their own story, make predications, and use the pictures to assist in generating a story. This allows for creative thinking. I do wish the books were slightly larger (it's about the size of my hand) so the images were easier for kids to see, but that is the only thing I would like improved. It is an excellent resource and item to have! I would recommend it.

PERFECT! I have been wanting this entire set for a while, as a speech therapist, they are great books for language & confidence for young readers because they have no words to into mirador them. The story can be in THEIR words.

My mother "read" this series to me when I was a kid, and I remember always reaching for this one for years afterwards. The illustrations are outstanding -- my mother and I would laugh over a different page every time we read it, because of the boy's expression, the frog's grin, or the way the dog sat. Simple things, but not only was I learning to enjoy books, I learned to use my words to tell stories, notice details, and just have fun with my parents. This isn't a passive "hear a story read to you" experience.Perhaps needless to say, this book is one of the first gifts I give to nieces and friends at baby showers or birthdays. At showers, everyone has a good laugh over the pictures, and it's always a big hit. My own kids will have the complete set -- probably before they're even born!

This is a great wordless picture book and I'm happy to have all in the series! It's a great addition to my speech and language therapy resources at school.

This book was one of my children's favorites so I purchased it for my 3 year old granddaughter. She can "read" it herself because the pictures tell the story so there is no need for words.

As always, among the best books for toddlers. Too bad the small boxed set of tiny books is so difficult to find and priced outrageously. Great to use with hands and fingers and "read" the story to enhance small children's vocabulary which is the key to learning how to read as young as 3 and it is not child abuse because they love it and what a pleasure to see my 3.5 year old son jump and shouting "I can read" as he had been reading and didn't know it. This book is awesome. It has just a few words on each page, easily understandable pictures, and is educational for toddlers without seeming to be so. This book puts the fun of the reading way ahead of the "being educational" without losing any learning value.

This was a favorite of my kids so I'm now getting it for my grandkids. The spine of this book is just cheap paper and it isn't going to last. As soon as the baby opens it up and sits on it, bites it, whatever it will be broken. And that's why we buy board books so they will hold up to rough play. Very disappointing. I looked at them in a store and they were this way too. I don't think a better binding is available in the board books.I give the story 5 stars and the binding 1.

I'm a big fan of the Bright & Early Board Books. This series takes familiar childhood favorites and miniaturizes it to a version that is friendly to toddlers in both physical size and content. This book goes over prepositions. The artwork is clean and simple but still delightful.This book is great for any toddler/infant library and given the size, it's great for on-the-go.

Just a fun little book for a little guy.

Such a cute book. I bought this to replace the original ripped apart (well loved) book. I didn't realize it was a board book (I didn't pay attention, it was my fault) but I love it just the same. My youngest adores the book.

Great rhythm, pictures, & humor - so glad to have found it in hardcover for new granddaughter! All my kids loved it & we used the last phrase as a metaphor for many of our own adventures &/or misadventures!

Glad that there are Berenstain Bear board books so I can start my son on the series early. It is an abridged version, so don't expect tons of pages. Great quality and size.

Nice, short book with few words. Basically all of the words are locations (inside, on, outside, upside down, rightside up), so it's pretty fast-paced for a little one who doesn't understand those concepts yet. Good tool to learn though?

Written by two different authors, who have totally different perspectives on rapid classifications. The runs written by the father are over classified (rapids listed as Class IV are probably Class III). The runs written by the son are sometimes slightly under classified (rapids listed as Class IV might be IV+). This means when you read a description and it lists a rapid as Class IV you have no idea what to expect. This book is extremely outdated and there are better options available.

This book is a fantastic resource with almost everything you want or need to know about the areas covered. My only criticism would be that the maps could stand more detail, and be smaller scale. Regardless, it clearly identifies the access locations for rivers, all the major rapids, and how to go through or get around them. I highly recommend it for anyone interested in paddling in the western Carolina's.

What a hidden little gem this book is. Though I'm Catholic, not Eastern Orthodox, I highly recommend it. The book would probably be best read during Lent, but I read it during Winter. The highlight of the book for me was chapters 15-18, "On Prayer". The book recommends we try to practice the unceasing prayer St. Paul speaks of in 1 Thess 5:17. Chapter 25 recommends the well known Jesus Prayer of the East "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." I use a prayer from the Catholic tradition "Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love you, save souls." We would be amazed at all the good we could do in this world and the next if we would spend more of those wasted moments, in a car, waiting for a train, in the doctor's office, in line at the grocery, etc, praying little prayers, aspirations, darts, ejaculations.I say the book would best be read in Lent because before the book leads us to the heights, it lays the foundation with the need for the cleansing of the heart and the purification of our desires. Chapter titles along this line include "On the Denial of Self and the Cleansing of the Heart", "On Fasting", and "On the Transfer of Love from the Self to Christ" among others. I suppose at times I'm too into comfortable American Christianity and don't want to hear words about denying myself. But I respect authors who tell me it because I know they're not trying to tickle my ears but are echoing and led by the True Spirit of Jesus.

Yes, it's a great book - but you do have to be serious about your spiritual life. The chapters are very short, maybe three pages each, but each packs a punch, and it's a hard-hitting punch, aimed at breaking down the walls of social comfort with which we all surround ourselves. It gets you thinking about modern life, contrasting it with the way the ancient ascetics achieved real holiness - by re-examining each and every one of their actions in the light of Christ, discarding anything that distracted them from life in Christ, striving to perfect what was left. A good reminder that spiritual warfare is unremitting, that the peace of Christ is only possible through spiritual warfare, and that it's a war we can only hope to win with the help of Christ in our lives.

This small book is one I will read slowly and repeatedly. I've read about 4 chapters so far and feel some deep breaking of ground. Perhaps I was ready for it, but I am grateful for this compilation of the wisdom of these early Christian sages. Thankfully, the chapters are brief so that you can pause and allow the truths to steep within one's heart before rushing to another gem. If you are serious and ripe for spiritual growth, if you want God to increase and your own self to decrease, this book could be for you. It is not a band-aid solution. Be prepared to work, or allow God to work within you. It is spiritual surgery. It is a helping hand to get you on the humbling path of becoming more like Jesus. I am so glad to have found it and recommend it highly.

Walk in to any book store in the U.S. or Canada and you will be deluged with a plethora of books and magazines on almost every spiritual path known to humanity; there are so many great titles on subjects ranging from Tibetan Buddhism, yoga and the Kabbalah. But one area of our collective spiritual heritage that is often conspicuously absent is writings on and from the western, specifically Christian, monastic tradition. There are a number of good books out there, but this one is truly excellent and is written in a clear, straightforward, and dare I say even simple style that is accessible to even novice mystics. Since the sexual revolution in the 1960's, asceticism has definitely fallen out of vogue in western Europe and North America, but in this small and readable book, Tito Colliander makes it clear why and how we should take up the "path of the acscetic". If you are looking for more than just the latest spirituality of the month from Oprah, and want to begin understanding the path of mystical Christianity and your own human nature then read this book, and even more so- put its advice into practice in your life. Colliander covers such important topics as fasting, the passions, prayer, and the reality of evil in our lives. I love puling it out on the subway, and reading a paragraph or two at a time; here is some simple yet dense food for the soul. Highly recommended!

Great book for those who want to try and live like an Ascetic (Monks and Nuns). I don't recommend as a beginning book for Orthodox Christians unless they go through it with a spiritual advisor or priest.

This book was recommended to me by an orthodox friend, and I have read and re-read it. The words are direct and the path of the believer as a disciple depicted as "The Narrow Way" described in Scripture. The path described by the ascetics, howeveer, is one desired by a believer who seeks a closer, obedient walk with God over a lifelong process.
