I bought this book for an 18 month old who adores big machines, especially airplanes and helicopters. I wanted to find an uncomplicated story that isn't just a nonfictional naming of airplane parts or patterns, but also didn't have too much text on the page. This little book is great for that - it tells the story of Pilot Small (sometimes "she" and sometimes "he" - the text says "he" but the drawings are fairly neutral, so I switch it up when reading with the kiddo) going to the hangar, fueling the plane, then flying over the countryside and returning home.At 18 months, our kid was happy to look at the airplane pictures and point out the little red car, and of course make sound effects. At 23 months, he can tell us more or less what's happening in the pictures (with sound effects!) and uses hand gestures or toys to act out parts where he can't pronounce the words. There's one page where Pilot Small does a loop, which tends to make him worried that Pilot Small will fall out - we often get stuck there because he tries to turn the book upside down to help Pilot Small, but when we turn the page, we've gone backwards in the story.I wasn't entirely sure how well this book would work when I bought it, but it has been a hit and is stored with the most requested books on the most easily accessible bookshelf. It will probably get rotated out soon, to give mom and dad a break, but it has definitely been the favorite of all of the airplane books given to the kid.

Most mornings, our toddler sits up, forms his hand into a plane, and says: "Plane! Take off... Vrrrrrrrm! Landing." He is airplane OBSESSED.This book basically follows that same story, in simple, easy-to-follow sentences, but with lots of nice details added in (things like how Pilot Small is proud of the flip he did, how he can see his tiny red car from the air). My son loves it!It's simple but not too simple. Highly recommended!

The book wasn't exactly what I thought it would be. The author describes in great detail the mechanics of and how to fly an airplane. She is very accurate. I bought this for my son who is a pilot to read to his 3 year old daughter. She is crazy about airplanes. I would recommend this book for a 6-7 year old and older. The book is well written, it's a great book, it just wasn't geared towards the age group I was looking for.

This book is precious. My 2 year old loves to read it and see the pictures of the pilot. It's realistic, but nothing too much at all. The pictures are great and there are details that my son can pick out like the pilot's house and the hangar at the airport. If your kid likes airplanes, you wont want to miss out on this book!

Adorable book! My 2.5 year old is obsessed with planes and this book holds his attention and has taught him new airplane jargon! Highly recommend it for miniature aspiring pilots! It is different from other books, but I find it a refreshing book. Doesn't rhyme. Doesn't get overly in depth into storyline. Just right for young readers.

This board book version is different from the hard cover one. It is abridged and pictures are cropped. It is much easier to read to younger kids but definitely lacks the fun engaging problem-based plot of the full version.

Lois Lenski had a wonderful way of drawing the essentials to tell a story. This is a charming board book for toddlers. My grandson, who adores cars, trains, and anything that can go "vrrrrm" loves it. When he is older, I hope he will enjoy "Prairie School" and the sensitively written true story of Molly Jamison, "Indian Captive".

This is such a sweet book. My three year old loves it, and I like the step-by-step description Lenski gives of driving to the airport, checking the plane, taking off, banking, and all the other things that go along with flying an airplane. The language is clear and concise with a good rhythm. It's also a nice gift, especially if you know of any children who might be interested in aviation.

I was looking for some new books to have when my grandson visits. He's the oldest, so I advance the level of my home library to meet his needs and fill in for the others if I need to. I happened across this book and, as is my habit, looked at the reviews. Most were 5-star, but I also look at the other reviews to see how they determined their rating. I decided to take my chances. This is a very nice book. My grandson's favorite books usually involve animals. When he was little, it was picture books about animals. This book looks like it will grow with him. It talks about the various parts of different animals and how they are used. He is very curious about what different animals do. so this should keep him interested. In the back of the book, there is a paragraph about each animal mentioned in the body of the book. I think this will interest him when he is older, more than now. My favorite books for children are books that are enjoyable for the adult to read as well as one that initiates a discussion. I think this book will do both of those.

This book is breathtaking, a real stand-out visually -- and at the same time grippingly educational and fun for kids. If you want to see that dawning light of curiousity and hunger for understanding in a child that's just learning that it's fun to learn, there's no better book than this one.The animals are rendered with great richness and depth by (if you look closely) beautiful torn-paper collages. It's so skillfully done by Steve Jenkins that all of the creatures are full of personality, and seem to live in a batik-cartoon world. The riveting part is how there are so many animals that each have unusual stories revealed through fun and different and interesting body parts. This is not a "first animals" book at all. Rather it gains its fascination by showing how animals make so many different uses of their body parts, uses that go against what you first think. For instance: A platypus uses its nose "to dig in the mud." But "[i]f you're an elephant, you use your nose to give yourself a bath" [image of trunk squirting water back over elephant's head]. For ears, you learn that a jackrabbit uses its ears to keep cool, and crickets have ears on their knees. A chimpanzee can eat with its feet, and a gecko's feet are sticky so it can walk on the ceiling. And so on.Engrossing and whimsical from page to page again and again. Just wonderful! At the end of the book, a section includes a one-paragraph "bio" with additional details about each animal, with the rest of the story on the unique appendage. For example, the chimpanzee has some general description, and also this detail about how they eat with their feet: "Like people, they have an opposable thumb. Unlike us, thy also have an opposable big toe. This allows them to pick up and manipulate things with their feet." This description is obviously way more advanced than the book itself -- but children love to hear more of the story about characters or animals from the adult reading to them, and this book gives you (the adult) the back story for every one of them.I was floored when What Do You Do with a Tail Like This arrived. Giggly and awed at the same time. The reviews didn't prepare me for how much I'd viscerally like this book the moment I opened it! I cannot recommend this highly enough!

Even if this book had only average illustrations, I would consider it a worthy book. I love how it teaches about animals in a way children can enjoy, appreciate, and interact with. Simple but powerful...and very fun.But the fact is that the illustrations are incredible! It looks like the images are made entirely out of paper and fabric, which creates an alluring abstract (and intriguing) aesthetic much like Eric Carle's awesome illustrations.I had my doubts before I purchased this book, but when I saw it I was so glad I did.

I bought this book for my grandchildren after observing a kindergarten class absorbed in its reading by their teacher. Like them, my grandchildren were so excited to try and guess the animals- all the while learning about new & different animals. Great book!

Amazing book. Shared it with a very curious nephew.

This very creative book imbeds interesting information about animals and then has more traditional presentation of information in the last pages. My experience has been that children ages 5-11 find it to be very engaging.

I had thought about buying this, but always decided not to. My son (5 years old) checked this out of the library on his own. He loves it. The cut-paper artwork is beautiful. Despite the fact-based discussion, it can be a very fun book to read. On the section about whales being able to hear sounds hundreds of miles away, my son always breaks into a whale song of his own. He also stunned his daycare teachers when they went on-line to check out his assertion that crickets had ears in their knees. So there you have it: fun, educational, beautiful!

My short roommates (kids) often gravitate to books about animals. WDYDWTLT manages to weave in very interesting information about a wide variety of animals without making it feel like learning.I usually lose one or both kids on the page with the "Blue-Footed Booby."The illustrations are sharp and the kids absorb curious facts they can show off later. This book proved to be a real find.

More like the inane ramblings of a prepubescent school girl than a memoir. I was growing bored with it already but when it got to the part when she met Jimmy Page I gave up. As a long time Zeppelin fan I'm quite familiar with the history of the band and the individual members. First, the stories about the conversations between her and Jimmy seemed more like her fantasies than reality, but I can't verify that one way or the other. But when she talks about be on the side of the stage while they played in 1969 and Jimmy wearing the black dragon suit I was done. Jimmy didn't start wearing the dragon suit until 1973. Might be a minor detail but for me it was the last straw for this book. Glad I got it on sale and only paid 1.99. I really wanted to like it but just couldn't finish.

met a rockstar, blew him. met a rockstar, blew him. repeat for 100some-odd pages...

I have read a few books on that time in music history and of groupies. This one is the best. Sweet Miss P, I would like to have been a friend. Anyone wanting an honest rendition of the late 60s and early 70s in Hollywood and beyond you must read this book.

Under the surface flash, I found this to be a sad story. Pamela seems to think she has no value by herself, so she seeks it by blowing famous musicians just before they go back to their wives and/or girlfriends. I just found that depressing. Maybe she was more calculating than I give her credit for, but I wouldn't want my daughter to grow up like that.I came of age only a couple of years after Pamela did. It was exciting enough just to admire bands from afar; it was a memorable time. But she talks way too nicely about way too many scumbags in this memoir. I'm glad she finally bagged a musician, for a while, anyway. She really seems hard to dislike in her airheaded way, and she may really have no regrets, but if she did, would anyone care?

This book reads like a teenager's sexy diary. I found the language to be nearly elementary. The writing style to be poor. I have been unable to finish reading the book because I find it to be rather boring. I fell below any expectation I had for this type of story. My recommendation is to save your money. Dull, predictable and boring to read.

Pamela Des Barres pulls a nothing-held-back look at her life amongst some of the rock greats of the 60's and 70's. Unabashed and unashamed about the sexual side of that life she gives us a personal look backstage in and amongst the easy to access rock stars of the time. Her group of girls GTO's (Girls Together Outrageously) has a moment in the sun but only Pamela was to emerge unscathed and still together. She really is an amazing woman that, despite, the sex, drugs and rock and roll she came out a winner and a very popular winner at that. This is well worth the read.

Such a fun read if you enjoy counterculture history! Perfect for the beach or the bath.

This girl was totally in the right place at the right time, so she was very lucky. It's a bit sad because all she ever wanted was to marry a rock star. Eventually, she did marry a very minor one but all in all, it's kind of depressing that she was so consumed by this desperate need to be close to someone famous. She had no job, really, no career and this was all she did, 24 hours a day--try to figure out how to sleep with this guy or that guy, in the hopes that they would fall in love with and marry her. It's ironic that it's such an old-fashioned notion (marriage) and yet, for all her "progressiveness," in the end, that's all she wanted. Lucky for us, she gives us a window into her groupie life but either she never had really substantial conversations with these men, or she just doesn't share that part. I think that would've been the most interesting part of a book like this. Unfortunately, these days, with so much security, groupies have it much harder than they used to, so Pamela was very lucky to have lived in this era, when rock stars were there for the taking. It's a phenomenon that we'll never see again, sadly.

Beautiful story, of two different people, knowing the loneliness of being an only child. Wanting to share a gift that had been left behind. GivenARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion.

Amish Baby Blessing: Amish Romance (Amish Women of Pleasant Valley Book 7)By Samantha Price is a great little story. In her special way, Samantha keeps us guessing for beginning to end as to what is coming next in this book. Her writings are never predictable. This is the story of two very unlikely people to ever be friends, let along more than that.Michaela came to Pleasant Valley to stay with Bishop Elmer and Hannah. Hannah had arranged for Mervin to show a young man, Michael around that was going to be staying with them. Problems appear when Michael turns out to be a very talkative, pushy, annoying, young lady whose name is Michaela.Together they set out to give one of Mervin’s friends baby a proper home. What adventures await these two as they strive to do a good thing for one small baby boy.You will enjoy the Amish Baby Blessing.

I always enjoy this author's book. Always an easy read, a little laughter and a touch of sadness.Thank you!

I enjoyed this story and how two unlikely people became a couple. This could happen in a "English" family, too, but I think the rules of the Amish faith would not let such a romance and wedding happen. Thanks for the story.

I enjoy reading books like this. They are clean and I love God is in them. Thank you. Looking forward to the next in series

Chuck Dixon is the writer who made me love Nightwing as a character and I've been fond of him ever since his Bludhaven series that, essentially, made Dick Grayson work as a solo character. The destruction of Bludhaven ruined his newly created system but he managed to recover with the extremely good GRAYSON series. That was basically doing a 1960s NICK FURY, AGENT OF SHIELD comic with Dick in his place and had a lot going for it. Sending Dick back to his solo career was a risky move but, having read the subsequent 4 trades--I'm very fond of it. Unfortunately, all of the good parts to the Rebirth Nightwing are missing here.Basically, this is a sequel to the execrable Court of Owls plot. I don't actually dislike the Court of Owls as I'm fine with any Illuminati stories and they were a decent one even if I don't believe Batman could miss, again, the Illuminati operating in his city without him noticing. It also has a focus on the ridiculous, "Hayley's Circus was secretly a school for ninjas" plot that was one of the worst elements of that plot. The premise of this title is Nightwing teams up with a Hayley's Circus ninja named Raptor (who kills Lincoln Marsh--a decent villain in his own right) who leads him down the Dark SideTM for a bit before going too far.I watched this story in the BATMAN: BAD BLOOD movie and it was more believable there because Damien Wayne was a child. Still, Raptor is surprisingly well written and the only reason this is getting 2 stars out of 5 instead of 1. Raptor is a Romani circus performer who encourages Dick to embrace his heritage as well as identify more with the underclass than his rich foster father. Class politics are always timely and Raptor makes a lot of lot of good points that Batman's vigilantism reaks of privilege--sadly, they don't have Bruce address any of them which is easy enough to do. After all, Bruce primarily goes after terrorists, serial killers, and mobsters versus the working poor. Nope, Bruce doesn't mention any of that.In any case, it's not terrible but there's a lot of weird moments spread throughout it too. There's also a lot of Batgirl/Nightwing tease which goes nowhere and is annoying for those of us who support the pairing. It's also weird because they've aged Batgirl down to her early twenties/late teens and aged up Dick to 28 or so--when Barbara used to be older.

I thought this was a lot of fun, the partner/villian of Nightwing was a really amazing character and I hope to see more of him in the future, however I had a problem with this volume. I love Nightwing as a hero, he's awesome, and when he became a spy in Greyson it wasn't really my thing. I liked him as a hero and it kinda turned me off of that comic, so when I had heard he was coming back as a hero I was extremely excited, however this first volume was basically still Greyson the spy while wearing his Nightwing costume. The entire volume he's tieing up loose ends of his spy life and infiltrating an organisation.... Like a spy... I want the hero, not the spy.

Great art and a great story. What more could you want? Perfectly captures the spirit and personality of Dick Grayson. I love the character interactions in this, from the ever changing relationship between Dick and Bruce to the brotherly bond of Dick and Damian. Perhaps the best part of this story is the introduction of Raptor. An incredibly entertaining anti hero that Nightwing is forced to team up with. They are great on the page together, from fight scenes to casual banter. Best new DC character in a long time. I look forward to the future he has in the DC universe; he would be a perfect recurring antagonist for Nightwing.

My last nightwing comic was the spyral series. He grew on me and I decided to start the rebirth series. I never finished spyral volumes but I picked this up and am not disappointed. With small recap of the spyral ending I'm on track and dove in this story. His new "teammate" made for a good story. Beautiful colors and art. Good quality.

Great return story for a fan favourite character. Captivating art and a fast paced storyline contribute to the overall excitement of revisiting the past of a hero, who has always been one of my favourites.

Just started reading comic books again. I started with Batman Rebirth, Nightwing Rebirth, and The Flash Rebirth. I have to say Nightwing's comics is really well drawn and has an amazing storyline. I love how Tim Seeley did. Great way to start comic books or to get back into comic books.

A great kickoff to a great series. If you're on the fence, checkout Nightwing Rebirth!

This new Nightwing story-arc is the I have read in a good while, I highly recommend it

Michael MacDonald's "All Souls" is a beautiful example of "this-and-that" writing. His coming-of-age memoir of growing up in the rabidly Irish-Catholic enclave of South Boston during the transitional 70s and 80s (drugs, integration, development, gentrification), neither excuses nor glorifies his neighborhood's appalling problems. He simply lays it all out in graphic, oftentimes violent, storytelling images. His style is more journalistic than memoirist: This is what happened - as he knew it or saw it, but not as he felt it - and that was that.Although I loved this book, I only gave it four out of five stars since it wasn't originally conceived, even though MacDonald is an original voice, and was poorly edited. "All Souls" was released more than two years after the 1998 independent film "Southie," starring Donnie Wahlberg, (the movie was shot in South Boston in 1997), which introduced many of the same literal and figurative ideas found in MacDonald's book.Perhaps MacDonald realized that along with all of South Boston's other lost chances - of lives, futures, hopes, traditions, neighborhoods and families - that the chance to tell their own stories was also being taken away by "outsiders."MacDonald deftly uses that victim mentality - that Southies see things as being taken away when in reality they are being left behind because they refuse to adapt and change - as the central theme for his story. South Boston was a proverbial case of "pride goeth before a fall." In MacDonald's telling, it was a hard pride and a hard fall and one from which Southie has yet to recover.

The book is interesting for its image of Southie as seen through the eyes of a child growing up there. The story starts out in the early 1970s, roughly 1974. I lived in greater Boston at this time. I moved there for work, excited to move to a college town, in the state that voted for George McGovern. Unfortunately, Boston was not just a college town. I had the wrong accent, and in business there were many Bostonians who treated me as an outsider, not to be trusted. That same distrust of outsiders pervades Southie. The events of the day were very disturbing. Having campaigned for Tom Bradley (first black mayor of Los Angeles) a few years earlier, I was horrified by events in Boston. Louise Day Hicks, people shouting “Bus the n****** back to Africa,” and the stoning of school buses were all beyond my comprehension.Although I witnessed racist parades in my neighborhood on Massachusetts Avenue, I only saw the events in Southie in the news, either the Boston Globe or WBZ. I had two colleagues at work, Joe and Michael, both from Southie, who had advised me not to go there without one of them to escort me. Hearing of the racial conflict in Southie, I envisioned working class whites against black kids, when in fact it was poor whites, many on welfare, resisting integration with black kids of similar or better economic status.Welfare mothers, having more babies by different fathers; unemployed alcoholic men hanging out on the street with a paper bag; dropouts; shoplifting and theft and gangs. That was a stereotype I had heard used to describe life in the ghetto. That same stereotype turns out to describe perfectly the white population of the housing projects in Southie, as described by the author.Early on, I read the smattering of negative reviews. I attributed some of them to being judgmental about the people in the book, including the author’s single mother, criminal siblings, and racist neighbors. Still, I enjoyed getting the author’s perspective, as the author is writing about his experiences as a child. But, as the book progressed I found myself losing interest. First, I was having trouble keeping track of all the characters, many of whom are siblings, but many are not. I should have started a list when I began reading the book. Second, I began to feel as if I were stuck in a waiting room, forced to watch The Jerry Springer Show. I didn’t think very highly of these people when I lived in Boston, and a more intimate portrayal does not help. In fact, they’re more dysfunctional than I thought.Boston has changed (and so has Southie), but the time I lived there is chronicled in this book. It was a year that persuaded me that I fit better in Los Angeles.Bottom line: I would grab a tablet to write down the names of all the characters as they appear, open Google Maps to South Boston, at the intersection of 8th Street and Dorchester Street (not Dorchester Avenue), and the traffic circle where Old Colony meets Columbia and Preble. Rotary Liquors is what was once the HQ for Whitey Bulger’s criminal enterprise. Read the book for as long as it holds your interest. If you can get through the litany of death and disaster in the middle, the story gains an adult perspective and once again commands attention.

This deeply moving biographical novel succinctly captures the eternal and historical struggle of the integrated relationship between racism and classicism in America. The trials and tribulations of a poor, large, White Irish family living in a Boston housing project clearly reflect the exact same life experiences of other poor ethnic/racial groups trying to make it and survive in this land of promised opportunity.Although the South Boston Bulger gangster phenomenon serves as a Greek chorus to the times, this passionate family story itself totally overshadows that scourge and underscores the unending challenges, desperation, and heartache of living poor in America.Adjust the color lens and, historically, you witness how political "saviors" prey on the vulnerabilities of the innocent and uninformed...all in the name of making America great again. All Souls takes place in the late 70's when the issue of busing and desegregation dominated Boston as well as national headlines. The reputation of the "hub of the educational universe", as an overtly racist enclave, intensified greatly at that time and still lingers today. This worthwhile novel, itself, is actually timeless in its themes of family crisis, intervention, and survival. All Souls is an excellent vehicle to use in high school and college classrooms to encourage discussions on the impact of racism and classicism in today's America and the future implications of its continued course.Definitely a thumbs up selection!
